The Union of the Frostlands:
Total Population 1927 Survey: Estimated Eleven thousand, four hundred and twenty two
The founding of the Union came to bare after the Storm to End all Storms, when New London still recovering from the storm sent out scouts and outpost teams to find the resources the city needed to maintain itself in the aftermath. Among them was Outpost 11, which was placed on a large rock shelf next to a massive underground warehouse that stored an immense quantity of steel but also a considerable number of steam cores.
The outpost was heavily reliant on supplies coming in from New London and when they was restricted, Outpost 11 encountered other survivors of the Freeze close by, these were three small settlements that had managed to scrape by thanks to either their location or by their resources. Together the four forged a strong trading network where supplies and resources were shared to support each other and allow for improvements to their people.
When New London made clear that Outpost 11 was to send back these resources for the sake of the city, 11 turned against their masters and together with the other three settlements forged a new identity as the Union of the Frostlands. Though New London promised that the revolt would be put down, this never happened due to a number of problems the city was facing. Eventually a deal was struck where in exchange for help in the form of resources to help New London recover, the Union would be recognised as an independent state.
Today the Union is still relatively small in terms of population and industry, but it has grown to include new members, its legislative power is held by the Union Assembly a group of elected individuals from all of its member. Above them is the Union President which serves as the Executive power, this position is elective and by constitutional law can only be held for a period of four years before an election is required and no person can hold the office of President for more than two elective terms in their life time.
The structure of the Union is clearly defined, though there is an Assembly and President and even a formed of a unified armed forces. These only have authority of the Union as a whole, they do not have official control over each members of the Union, each are permitted to have their own local governance, with the Union Assembly discussing, proposing, voting on, enacting and enforcing decisions that effect the entire Union as a whole.
The Union prefers to regard itself as a confederacy rather than a single grand nation, such is embedded within their constitution, with checks and balances being held in place against all three structures of government, the President of the Union has checks against the Assembly and the Supreme Courts and vice versa for the latter, the Assembly has checks against the Courts and President etc.
Whilst other nations relay on alternative forms of travel across the Frostlands when it comes to transporting materials and people between cities, towns and settlements. The Union does something different, they still use Frost-Trails as well as what they call "Ice Roads", roads that are kept well marked and cleared of hazards by large "Dozers" vehicles with large ploughs. Along these roads, Steam powered vehicles they call Ice trams, basically land based vehicles that pull a series of sleds with materials as well as people back and forth between the different members of the Union, enabling the Union to connect itself with little construction effort and limited manpower.
Internationally, the Union of the Frostlands is very much glued to trade with its neighbours, notably the Commonwealth of New London. Though it is trading further afield with other nations, such as the Republic of Glacias, the Victorian Free State and the New American State. With the Commonwealth and the Free State, the Union has a strong Defensive treaty, where all three are required to support each other in the event of aggression from other powers, for instance if the Union is attacked by the Sovereignty, then the Commonwealth and the Free State are required by the Alliance to declare against the aggressor and support the Union both militarily and in civil aid.
Members of the Union:
The Union of the Frostlands does not have any real cities within its members, they are comprised almost entirely of towns, settlements and outposts. This is mostly due to the Union not founding or establishing any major colony efforts in the Frostlands, instead all of its members are either independent settlements that have joined of their own free will, or are settlements founded by the Union.
This is also due to the relatively small population of the Union when compared to other nations, whilst some nations have populations in the tens of thousands in their largest cities.
In total by 1927, the Union of the Frostland has a total of Nine member settlements and several smaller outposts throughout its territory. Most of the Settlements are very much tied to one or more of the most important resources within the Frostlands, wood, Iron, Coal, Food, Oil etc. Though things are not as they once were, with everything focused around the extraction of resources, the Union is making strides to improve its industrial capabilities, whilst in the past, it was limited and relied on trade for manufactured goods, it is now slowly reaching the point that it can maintain itself.
New Jericho: The Capitol
"For Peace, For Freedom, For the Future" Official Motto of New Jericho.
Population 1927 Survey: Three Thousand, Seven Hundred and Thirty Two
The Capitol of the Union, New Jericho was formerly Outpost 11 and had been founded specifically for the extraction of Steel and Steam Cores from the giant warehouse that had been constructed decades prior into the mountain rock. The original outpost was set up along a flat ledge of the mountains side which connects directly to the warehouse entrance, a strip of rock that to this day is known as "The Edge".
The only way into the outpost was via an elevator system which enabled for people, supplies and materials to be moved to and from the Transport Depot at the bottom. For weeks the site upheld its duty to send steel and steam cores back to New London, but when troubles back in the city meant that shipments of supplies were delayed or held back. The Outpost captain sent out scout teams to find resources and supplies to support the outpost until the situation eased, these scouts found the Hot Springs who were willing to support Outpost 11 with food and then the Shipwreck camp and the Children's mine.
But when New London demanded that any and all resources that Outpost 11 received had to be sent back to the city, those in the Outpost were outraged and along with the other settlements declared their independence from New London. They rechristened the Outpost as the Settlement of New Jericho and began working with the other three settlements to improve each others lives.
Due to its central location between them all, New Jericho was chosen to be the capitol of this new Union and would serve as the trade hub between them, so food from the Hot Springs would go to New Jericho and then taken further to either of the other two and so on. When the Union and New London forged an agreement which resulted in the Union being recognised as an independent state, New Jericho underwent changes that turned it from an outpost into a full and complete settlement.
Whereas before the Settlement was focused on a small plot of rock with everything being built on "the Edge". Now New Jericho has long since been expanded, whilst the core of the Settlement, the Government buildings like the Union Assembly building and the Presidents offices, the Telegraph office etc, are still situated on the "Edge", the settlement has expanded lower, with the elevator connecting the "Edge" to the rest of the settlement.
Before, New Jericho was very much reliant on supplies coming in from other settlements, but now with work and aid from said settlements, the Town has managed to sustain itself at least partly, whilst it still needs fuel like coal and oil from other settlements alongside wood. It is at least partly able to feed itself, thanks to fertile soil being brought in from the Hot Springs and other locations, which are used in a number of hot houses.
The Hot Springs:
"The Waters sustain us, so shall they heal us" Motto of The Hot Springs
Population 1927 Survey: One Thousand, Two Hundred and Ninety
Built around a collection of several natural hot springs, the Settlement was established by survivors for years who used the warmth provided by the Springs to survive the freeze and keep their people safe. For years the Settlement survived, salvaging what they could to construct homes and other buildings, but their main focus is on their renewable source of supply.
For the Hot Springs is capable of producing a substantial amounts of food far more than needed to feed their population. So when they were found by the members of Outpost 11, soon to be New Jericho, the Hot Springs were more than willing to send food supplies to the site to support them. In return the Hot Springs were given help in improving their settlement, simple things at first but then with help from the other settlements, they managed to gain a better life than before.
They had warm comfortable homes for their people, water-overflow systems, a proper infirmary, etc. Whilst before the Hot Springs were surviving, now with the other settlements they were thriving, when New London asked for aid, at first the Hot Springs were unwilling to support them, but did agree to send help when New Jericho negotiated a deal, in which the Union would be recognised.
Ever since the Hot Springs have remained a firm and staunch member of the Union, with the improved hot houses and greenhouses providing amble food for most of the Union as well as serving as a place of refuge and healing. With the Caverns within being used as a place for people suffering from emotional and physical pains can find healing in a traditional form of medicine.
Due to the abundance the Springs provide both in terms of food but also heating from the springs, makes the Hot Springs one of the most populated settlement within the Union. They are second only to the capitol of the Union, New Jericho.
Shipwreck Town:
"We are not Slaves, We are Free Men" Motto of Shipwreck Town
Population 1927 Survey: Seven Hundred and Eighty two
The site of Shipwreck Town was a literal shipwreck, a large ironclad vessel that was used to transport convicted criminals from Generator Site to Generator site where they were used as forced labour for the construction efforts. In this case the vessel was caught in the ice and trapped, the Prisoners took control and improvised a living space within the wreck of the vessel, rather than using coal to support themselves they harvested wood from the ice itself as well as from nearby forests frozen in ice, to fuel boilers and burners to maintain heat within the ship and keep themselves alive.
They were encountered by Outpost 11 scouts during their efforts to find the resources they needed to maintain the outpost, the two sides struck up a trade agreement and this later included the Hot Springs and then Children's Mine. During the founding of the Union after Outpost 11 revolted against New London, the Shipwreck Camp joined the revolt fearing that the powers of New London would see the back in prison cells.
But since the Union promised amnesty and equality, the survivors joined the Union and became a founding member, providing the wood needed to build up the other members. When New London gave the truth and asked for help in restoring the city before it collapsed, the people of Shipwreck camp were against the idea as a number of them had been forced to work in building the generators.
Yet in the end when they understood that by supporting New London, the Union would receive complete autonomy and be recognised as a totally independent state from New London, they accepted to provide aid in the form of materials.
As the years have gone on, the Shipwreck Camp became something very different, a full settlement was established, though the original wreck remains the heart of the town. New buildings have been built up and constructed as the decades have passed, where once the camp was made up entirely of just men, living in cramped and confined living quarters improvised within the hull of the wreck. Now there are real families, in properly built homes supported and kept warm by heaters and boilers, there are shops and inns, a true town.
Shipwreck Town still is linked to the business and industry of providing timber for the Union but in the changing world, they have expanded into new areas, the Kilns they used to use to make charcoal are being interlinked with liquification factories which produce a simple and crude form of oil to support not only themselves but also the rest of the Union.
Children's Mine:
"We work so they may live, not just exist" Motto of Children's Mine
Population 1927 Survey: Eight Hundred and Fifty
Originally a rather sad place, the Children's Mine was a small settlement of survivors that had managed to cling on by taking refuge within a collection of mine shafts to escape the worst of the Freeze and the storms. Supported by the mining of coal to use in heaters during difficult times, the great problems the people here suffered were two fold, the first being that everyone was always struggling when it came to food, the survivors were having to live on small scraps of food from whatever they could find.
Another was the unfortunate truth that the mining of coal could only be done by the youngest among them, the name Children's mine was literal, only children could work the mines in order to get the coal they needed to keep warm, whilst the adults would handle the work outside the inner workings of the mine.
Thankfully things changed when the Mine was found by Outpost 11 after it became New Jericho, seeing the problems the people were facing, they offered aid in the form of support from both themselves and the other settlements. In exchange for supplies of coal to the other settlements, they would provide the materials including supplies to allow for the people at the Mines to go beyond barely surviving.
Proper houses were built for the people, supported by heaters and boilers, the mines were expanded so that children would no longer be forced to do the work alone. Steel tools and other pieces of equipment were sent to help the people and make it easier for them. The Hot Springs helped to build hot-houses so that the people could actually have a source of nourishment beyond just the food sent to them by the Hot Springs.
When New London made clear their desperation and request for aid, the people of Children's Mine were supportive to helping, out of the hopes that many of them had that their families and loved ones could be in the city. They provided what coal they could spare to send through New Jericho as well as that many residents were willing to go to New London to help in the rebuilding and repairs of the city. Many would stay in the city afterwards, whilst the rest would return or remain in the Children's Mine and became one of the four founding settlements of the Union of the Frostlands.
Today the town is very different from what it was once, the mines are no longer worked by children, they have long since been expanded and improved upon so that the young can live without having to work in the mines. As times have changed, the Coal from the mines has not been forsaken, rather instead they are now put through the Coal Liquification plants that the Town has in operation.
With the "Coal Oil" being used in the towns boilers and heaters as well as being sent off to the other Union members. At the heart of the town is a monument honouring and remembering the efforts of the original inhabitants of the Mines and their desperate efforts to survive the freeze.
Dreamers Quarry:
"We gave for the Present, now we work for the future"
Motto of Dreamers Quarry
Population 1927 Survey: Seven Hundred and Ninety six.
Situated in relatively protected valley with mountains on three sides, Dreamers Quarry was originally a site where construction materials meant for the Generator Sites were worked, notably stone as well as metals. The I.E.C used the site to harvest all manner of materials from the surrounding mountains to support the construction efforts in other parts of the Arctic, it was never intended for long term habitation.
However as the the Freeze began to take hold, sites such as Dreamers Quarry were forgotten about and left to fend for themselves, like some other sites the I.E.C used, there were efforts to make the site partly self sufficient specifically in terms of food. These facilities managed to hang on for the people trapped there when the freeze came in and all communications with the I.E.C and the government was lost.
Apparently many of the workers at the site attempted to make their way to a generator site in the hopes of finding safety as well as find out what had happened to their families. However the grip and extremes of the cold meant that many more decided to stay at the site and use the materials they had to keep themselves warm and alive. For years the survivors here manged to eek out a living salvaging what they could, continuing to harvest minerals and materials from the mountains around them as well as construct some efforts to feed themselves.
Among these efforts was the domestication of Reindeer and other arctic wildlife, including some Musk Oxen that had been brought over to serve as a source of meat for the workers. These animals became the main stay for the entire settlement, not just for their meat and their hides which were used to make warm clothing for the people, but also their strength, both were used to pull sledges and slays along the snow and ice between the main settlement and the mining efforts close by.
They were found by the Union of the Frostlands, not long after its recognition as an independent nation, seeing the advantages that being a member of the Union would bring, in terms of materials, fuel and support in terms of construction and manpower. The Settlement joined the Union as its fifth member, becoming a eager member in its cooperative trading between settlements. The Reindeer and Musk Oxen herds were soon expanded and used to help the transportation of goods, materials and supplies between the settlements before the creation of the Frost-trails proper.
Even now, with little need for their animals to pull heavy loads over long distances, Dreamers Quarry still keeps the herds healthy and strong, as well as that they continue to work the quarries and mines around their settlement. Trading in goods like properly shaped stone, minerals like sulphur, magnesium and lead.
Alderworth:
"Linked together, we shall survive and thrive" Motto of Alderworth
Population 1927 Survey: Five Hundred and Twenty three
Originally a research station for the Imperial Exploration Company and the Royal Society as well as a resupply point for the Royal Navy, Alderworth was established originally with scientific research and exploration. When it was founded little was known properly of the Arctic circle and there was an interest in discovery at the time.
The Intention was to establish a permanent outpost in the Arctic circle from which expeditions could be conducted during the summer months for the purpose of map making, scientific research and exploration. However this rapidly changed with the first signs of the great freeze, the site was then used to conduct careful studies on the approaching frost and the severity that it presented.
When things started to get worse, the site was deemed a low priority and was hurriedly abandoned, since resources and supplies were needed at home as well as a the Generator Sites. The need to study the frost was superseded by the needs of survival.
During the Early years, a group of exiles from New Albion were forced into the wilderness by the ruling powers in the city, among them were women and children. Most of them had been sentenced to exile for a number of supposed crimes, notably treason against the Sovereign of the City, meaning they refused to acknowledge the rule of the nobility. They were forced to wander the frostlands for days if not weeks, taking shelter in caves and abandoned structures wherever they could find them, they feared that the frostlands would be their end.
Instead they found Alderworth and managed to survive thanks to the equipment, materials and supplies that had been left behind, including a series of braziers, heaters and boilers. An added benefit of the site was that it had been built to last, as it had been built specifically to survive the cold and extremes of the arctic winters, so whilst it needed to be kept secure with constant work, the survivors here managed to cling on.
They were found by the Union when scouting units came across the site by accident whilst looking for additional resources. Upon discovering that other humans had managed to survive, the people in Alderworth requested to join the Union, the assembly gathered and discussed the request, after some deliberation, all members agreed that the people of the settlement would be accepted into the Union at first as provisional members for a period of time, then were offered and accepted full membership a year later.
By this point though Alerworth was considerably different from what it used to be, what was previously a collection of small bunkhouses where everyone had to share space including bed space, basic living conditions and simple braziers and heaters, had grown. Today Alderworth is a full fledged town, with homes and houses replacing the cramped bunkhouses, hot-houses are now replacing the desperate efforts to hunt and scavenge food from the frozen wilderness, all of it thanks to the support of the other settlements.
And Alderworth has repaid the effort in kind, due to its proximity to the border with the Sovereignty and the Commonwealth, Alderworth has become a transit hub for that region of the Union, any an all transport in that region pass through Alderworth. So Outposts, forts and resource extraction sits in the region are connected to Alderworth, this includes the local headquarters for the Union militia for the region is here, where the active units are commanded
But this does not mean that the town is not worth more than just a hub for moving around. Alderworth has taken efforts towards expansion, becoming a true town in more than just the name sake. The town has been working towards the establishment of industries based on the equipment that was left behind when the site was originally a Research and Exploration outpost for the British Empire.
I.E.C:
"Forging the Future" Motto of I.E.C
Population 1927 Survey: Three Hundred and Seventy Five
One of two settlements that were actually founded by the Union on its own, I.E.C was originally a site built during the last autumn, its purpose was to support the efforts of the Generator Construction sites. In this case the site would be sent a variety of raw materials and it in turn would take those materials and make more refined elements, for instance iron would be sent and it would ship out steel.
And not just simple matters, but the site also was used to manufacture machine parts and prefabs for the generator sites in an effort to complete as many generators as possible before the freeze got so bad. Eventually the site was completely abandoned possibly due to the nearby harbour freezing over, making it impossible to receive any materials or send them off, but also for the more important reason of evacuation.
Apparently when the site was abandoned, the I.E.C left behind a considerable amount of materials as well as machinery and factories that held them all, such is proof of how desperate things were at the end. When Union scouts found the site, it was considered a viable location for an entirely new settlement, one that could support the Union industrially, rather than just with basic materials and resources as the other settlements do.
After a considerable amount of work and toil, I.E.C is now well and truly a viable settlement for the Union, materials are brought here from other settlements where they are put to use in the factories within, machine parts, commercial goods, most of the items that the Union needs manufacturing are produced here at I.E.C.
Ironworth:
"With Iron from Ice, we can rebuild" Motto of Ironworth
Population 1927 Survey: Six Hundred and fifteen
A major mining town in the Union, Ironworth was a small population of less than a hundred people who had managed to cling onto survival during the freeze and the storm to end all storms. Its uncertain who these people were exactly, they definitely were people who had fled Britain during the Freeze, but where from exactly is uncertain.
They managed to survive thanks to the mountains that surrounded them on all four sides, with only a small gorge providing access to their valley. Thanks to the mountains, the people managed to live through tough times, with supplies of coal providing them with enough fuel to keep warm when things were hard. Small hot-houses managed to provide just enough food to keep everyone fed, if only barely, improvised homes were constructed in which everyone had to share space.
The town was found by the Union years after its founding, the two had a good relationship for a few months with Ironworth trading its ample supply of minerals and metals from its surrounding mountains and the Union exchanging other materials like coal and food. Eventually the mayor of Ironworth put forward to the settlement the prospect of joining the Union properly, they agreed and the request was put to the Union assembly.
It was accepted and Ironworth cheered as a small detachment of the Union Militia paraded into the town and raised the Union flag high. In the months that followed, the town saw an increase in its living, buildings that were improvised or hurriedly constructed were replaced with proper structures that were far better than those that came before.
Today Ironworth is very different to the old settlement that stood in its place, it is slowly growing into a true town, with all the makings and structures that such a town would have. The town shops and businesses, two inns that does more than just sell drinks but also relatively comfortable beds, people living their lives for more than just everyday survival.
Ripfall:
"Fueling the Future" Motto of Ripfall
Population 1927 Survey: Four Hundred and Seventy Nine
The other settlement that was specifically founded by the Union itself, Ripfall was established due to the need for alternative fuel sources, especially as other nations were taking a keener interest in Oil. Seeing the benefits of this new fuel source, the Union began sending out scout teams to find sources for themselves, they found a viable long lasting source along section of frozen coastline.
Ripfall was founded a little while later, at first heavily reliant on the supply convoys that were sent from the other settlements, this was at least until the settlement could properly build up sufficient means of supporting itself, in terms of food and materials. Eventually the town became a viable settlement capable of maintaining itself to an extent and started proper construction of the Oil pumping stations, then months later, the town was sending out regular exports of oil from their pumping stations.
This enabled the Union to properly continue its construction in other settlements as well as slowly start turning away from coal as the main fuel source in favour of oil. And allowed those places in the Union that were heavily reliant on coal extraction to properly reorganised towards coal liquification, at least partly.
After a period of time, it was decided by the Union Assembly that the town would be formally recognised as a new member to the Union rather than just a town established by the others. Today, Ripfall remains the primary provider of oil for the Union but also due to its placement in the farthest frontier of the Union, the town serves as the home base for scouting teams exploring the Frostlands beyond the borders of the Union.
Both in search of additional resources but also for other settlements of survivors in the wilderness, that they may trade with and perhaps offer inclusion into the Union.
Outposts:
Outposts in the Union are rather different when compared to other nations in the Frostlands, whilst most nations use Outpost as temporary sites focused normally on resource extraction or serve as strong points for their military and so on. The Union uses Outposts for transit and defence, all the Outposts the Union have are focused either along the Frost trails they use for transit and transportation, or are close to the borders serving as protective locations for its militia to guard the borders.
But one similar element between the Outposts of the Union and those of other nations is their sustainability, like everyone else's, the Outposts of the Union are reliant on supplies and materials coming in from the main settlements and towns in the Union. This means everything from food rations, supplies of fuel and building materials, everything that the Outposts need have to be brought in by Ice tram to the outpost from one of the towns.
Fort Robinson:
"Freedom Is Worth Fighting For"
Population 1927 Survey: One Hundred and Fifty
One of three outposts established specifically by the Union militia, Fort Robinson was set up during the early years of the Unions founding, its placement is close to where the borders of the Union meet those of both the Commonwealth and the Sovereignty, making it an important position for the militia.
It was constructed upon at a solid rocky escarpment, with steep ice slopes on three sides with the only way to reach it being a relatively solid slope which is heavily fortified with Ice trenches, solid stone walls both of which are embedded with gun positions for heavy cannons and maxim machine guns, all of them trained and sighted to make sure that entire approach is "Pre-sighted".
Like other forts established by the Union, Fort Robison serves as a patrol station for the Militia along the border, as well as points for the Militia to work out from to resist any incursions from other nations. During the Frostland wars, Fort Robinson was on the frontline for the Union against the Sovereignty, serving as the stronghold that held that region of the Union from attacks by the Sovereignty.
During the conflict, Fort Robinson survived two attacks by the Sovereignty and held out during a six week siege.
Frontier Forts:
Population 1927 Survey: Average of One hundred and Fifty
As Fort Robinson was the template for the Union, since its founding, the nation has established a series of what they call Frontier Forts, these serve in similar respect to the duties of Fort Robinson. These forts are all situated along the borders of the Union and serve to protect the Union by providing as encampments and strongholds for the Unions Militia, enabling them to effectively patrol the borders as well as resist any incursions from hostile nations.
In total there are seven Frontier Forts, all of them spread out, but this is not equal these forts are not placed equally along the entire territory of the Union. For example along the length of the Border closest to the territories controlled by the Sovereignty, since they are the closest nation that are considered a threat to the independence of the Union and its members.
Along this region there are four of the seven forts, placed in key locations that are easily defendable for a relatively small force of militiamen. The other three are situated at different points and are more individual, one sits close to the border with the Commonwealth, one at the eastern border and one to the north.
In fact the southern most fort, the one that sits at the border with the Commonwealth was originally a small outpost established by New Jericho when it first broke away from New London. But at the time it wasn't intended to serve as a military fort to hold back any retaliation from New London, instead the outpost was more of a look out point for the militia, with its sole job to maintain a careful watch and alert New Jericho to the approach of New London guards.
Due to the limitations of the Union in regards of its militia mostly being comprised of volunteer reservists, these frontier forts are always built in places where smaller numbers can hold back larger forces, using a variety of different elements from natural to constructed defences.
The former being the position of the forts themselves, at sites where access is restricted to large numbers, like atop escarpments with steep slopes on multiple sides, on large rock ledges where access is only capable with elevators etc. The latter being a series of constructed defensive structures, such Ice trenches, solid walls, gun positions, redoubts etc, all to give the different garrisons in the forts as much of an advantage against nations with larger industrial capabilities and military strength.
Transit Stations:
Population 1927 Survey: Average of sixty
These are common outposts for the Union across its territory, Transit stations are small outposts that are dotted at equal points along all of the Ice Roads trails that are the Unions main means of transit through the frostlands.
These stations are placed at regular intervals to serve as support and resupply points for convoys moving along the Ice roads, in these stations, those onboard could find shelter during storms and whiteouts, they can resupply vehicles with fuel and supplies before continuing on their journey. Or they can transfer their cargoes onto another vehicle if required, such as mechanical malfunction or because a specific vehicle was not suitable for a certain stretch of the roads.
The placement of these stations was carefully considered, those on flat stretches of the roads where their is little risk or limited hazards are further apart as these stretches of the Ice roads allow for the convoys to more further safer and quicker. Whilst those that placed along sections where there are hazards that can limit the travel distance for the convoys, are closer together for the sake of safety.
The idea of the Transit Stations came into effect before the Union became a dedicated nation, during the early years when Outpost 11 soon to be New Jericho made contact with the other three founding members of the Union. Trade began almost immediately between them, however there was a major problem, none of the settlements had any effective means of transport. Meaning supplies and resources were carried on sleds that were pulled by people, this made it very dangerous for those individuals that worked those routes, there was always the concern of the frozen wilderness taking its toll.
Add on the fact that at first the routes used to transport everything were not properly marked, meaning that there was always a risk of groups losing their way and eventually getting themselves lost in the ice and snow. Originally the plan was to just place clear markers along the trails so the people wouldn't lose their way, later due to the constant risk of the weather, at halfway points between them all, outposts were set up and manned to provide those moving along the trails a place to rest, get some food and shelter from the weather when bad.
In total there are 13 Transit stations across the Union, each of them serving as support stations for transit routes, they are manned by a small group of volunteers who receive dedicated payment for their services and are rotated out on a regular basis.
This concludes the basic information on the Towns, Settlements and Outposts that make up the Union of the Frostlands as of the year of our lord 1927.
The next documents in line shall detail The Socialist Republic of Winterhearth, the Sovereignty of New Albion, The Victorian Free State and the Republic of Glacias.
[ These are yet to be written but the point is, that I intend to make similar short stories like this one in this specific order.]
