The Socialist Republic of Winterhearth:
Total Population estimate 1927 survey:
One Hundred and twelve Thousand, Seven hundred and eighty seven.
![]() |
| Flag of the Socialist Republic -1927 |
A major power within the known Frostlands, the Socialist Republic of Winterhearth is proof of determination and hardwork, in its history it has struggled from the very beginning. Problems with its Generator, internal strife, civil war and desperate rebuilding efforts following the destructive conflict that led to its foundation as a Socialist Republic.
When it was properly established, the "City" that was founded at Winterhearth was led by a "Cabal" Engineers who used the excuse that as those responsible for the maintenance and upkeep for the Generator and know the inner workings of the machinery. Then they should be the ones to live closest to the generator itself, whilst the average workers and their families should live further away, close to their work areas.
This was extended further due to the large crevasses that divide the city itself, with the Engineers living at the heart of the city next to the Generator whilst the rest of the population had to live on the other side of these crevasses with the only connection being a series of bridges.
For years the system of power remained in place, with the Engineers and their families enjoying a much better standard of living than the rest of the population, which included better living quarters which included proper houses. The excuse for this all was that the system of power in Winterhearth was critical for the survival of humanity, because at this time there was no contact with any of the other Generator sites, so like all the other cities, Winterhearth believed that they were alone in the world.
When contact was established with other cities, this turned very quickly among the lower classes of the population, who soon began calling for change in the governance of the city, they demanded the removal of the privileges that were being enjoyed by the higher classes. Eventually these calls turned to protests and these were met by guards with truncheons, eventually there were full blown riots, demanding the total removal of the Engineering leadership and domination of the city, armed guards were sent to put an end to these riots and many were shot and killed.
This forced a full fledged uprising within the city, as people rose up in total rebellion, using every kind of weapon they can get their hands on to turn against the Guards. After much brutal fighting with districts becoming complete warzones, the rebels managed to overwhelm the guards and overthrew the leadership.
They established a new socialist government in the city, its governmental structure is careful established with a number of careful checks to curtail authority of the leadership. The Executive position is that of the Steward, who serves as an elected official by a clear majority vote by the citizens, beneath the Steward is the Politbureau, which serves as the Legislative power, voting on proposals for laws and acts put forward by the Steward, whilst also serving as the primary check against the Stewards authority.
Eventually as the city expanded into the Frostlands, they created a nation properly, with colonies and settlements in various places. All of them connected not by frost trails, roads or even skyways, instead the Socialist Republic uses a series of carefully constructed Railway lines, with proper trains with large ploughs at the front of their engines, enabling the Socialist Republic to transport a large quantity of materials and supplies back and forth with relative ease.

Internationally, the Socialist Republic is in relative peace, though they are often embroiled with tension and occasional border disputes with the Sovereignty of New Albion, Winterhearth has managed to protect its territory. Diplomatically, Winterhearth has in the past engaged in a territorial conflict years prior, the two powers are now bound by a signed peace treaty and cooperative and proactive trade agreement.
The Main Cities:
Similar to other major powers in the Known Frostlands, the Socialist Republic has a number of majors cities, all but one of them being colonies established by Winterhearth itself. All of these cities are expansive and built up, as with other nations, these colonies were established due to their connection with one or more resources such as fertile soil, fuel sources or raw materials like wood or iron.
But as with most cases, these colonies soon expanded and became true cities with countless districts in each. All of these cities have dedicated Rail stations, which connect them with the other Cities and towns, as well as means of transport within the city limits itself, in the case of Winterhearth these are skyways though smaller than the ones that other nations like the Commonwealth use to traverse the frostlands.
Winterhearth: Capital
"The Elements care not, as Equals we shall prevail" Motto of Winterhearth
Population 1927 survey: 47,980
The Capital of the Socialist Republic and its name sake, Winterhearth was built around a collection of deep crevasses of varying sizes, some are relatively small and are not very deep, whilst others are akin to small gorges. For this reason the city has a number of bridges connecting the different points, stretching across these crevasses, some of these bridges are simple at appearance, whilst others specifically across the largest crevasses are well built and well designed bridges with steel towers hoisting up steel cables alongside the stone and steel support structures beneath.
For years the city was focused around the Generator, like other cities in the known frostlands, but over time after the Great Storm, it began to grow further outwards. The city suffered a considerable amount of damage during its civil war against Socialist Rebels and the current reigning leadership, as the entire city became a warzone during the conflict. After their victory the new Socialist government dedicated itself to rebuilding and renewal.
With social ideology and what some refer to as "Communism", the city has changed considerably, before where there were slums and impoverished citizens, these were replaced with proper housing districts, with dedicated housing with the cramped quarters being turned into proper homes and apartments for the people of the city. The Food production districts were expanded to provide a surplus for the population that had been living on basic food rations.
Industrial districts were expanded on to fuel the building efforts, the Generator was reworked to restore equal heating to the entire city and to fuel the Generator itself, the coal mining efforts were taken further afield to provide the needed fuel. Today Winterhearth is a true city of scale, with tens of thousands of residents living within the city limits, living in comforts that the old city was unable to enjoy.
At the heart of the city is the Grand Station, a huge train station with six rail lines and a dedicated rail district where the rail lines diverge, those carrying resources and supplies would in one side, whilst those with passengers would go another. This same rail district also serves to maintain the rail lines close to the city as well as the different trains and cars that the nation uses to transport everything through its territories. Day in and day out, trains come into this district, bringing everything that the city requires to maintain itself, food supplies, tankers filled with oil or natural gas.
Another dedicated district is the "Red Guard District", a section of the city dedicated to the Revolutionary Forces of Winterhearth (R.F.W) which by this point has been reformed into the Red Guard, within the district are dedicated barracks for the soldiers, the main headquarters as well as the main armouries, production facilities for the equipment, weapons and munitions. From this district, the Red Guard Command maintain control over the different Forts, Stations and Outposts that the Red Guard garrison, maintain and conduct their duties from.
And of course, Winterhearth holds the centre of the Socialist Republic political leadership, it is in the heart of Winterhearth that the Politbureau sits within the House of Government to conduct their duties in discussing, proposing and voting. Next to that is the Presidium, the building that serves as the main office and residence of the Office of the Steward of Winterhearth.
Access into the it is carefully guarded, the gorges, canyons and mountains that surround the city limits restrict access, whilst rail lines with tunnels and bridges have been built to remove the risks of traversing these natural obstacles, the only real entrance remains a break in the surrounding mountains through which all the cities rail lines pass through. This entrance is guarded and protected by a large fortified settlement, which serves to protect the city should anyone attempt to attack the capitol of the city.
Whiteguard: Major Colony
"From the Frost We shall Thrive" Motto of Whiteguard
Population 1927 survey: 14,420
A major effort by the Socialist Republic to colonise the Frostlands, in fact it was the first, as at the time Winterhearth was struggling with sources of coal being rapidly depleted and when it was gone the city would have no means of keeping the Generator going and the people alive. The sources that the city had been relying on for years had been greatly depleted during the Great Storm or had been wasted by the Engineering leadership and further still during the reconstruction efforts after the Revolution.
So when a new source was found, one that could provide more than enough coal to sustain a colony as well as enough of a surplus to send out regular shipments. Recognising this, the Politbureau decided that the site was a viable option for the creation of Winterhearths first attempt at colonising the Frostlands. A call was made for volunteers of 500 to lead the effort in establishing a settlement at the site to start the process of building a true colony.
After months of planning and weeks of preparations, the colonists set off along a trail established by a scouting unit to help the move to the site. A few days later a message arrived through the telegraph wire that had been set up to allow for communication, it stated that the colonists had arrived safely, the first settlement had been established and they would soon begin mining efforts. Later however a request came for additional resources as the generator they were using was experiencing malfunctions and required different materials and parts to repair it, the request was acknowledged and supplies sent.
Communications broke down following this due to a sudden Whiteout that passed through the area, when it passed, there was no response from the site, scouts were sent and found the people there clinging on for survival. Seeing the dangers, a second wave of colonists was sent to provide additional manpower to the colony alongside a variety of additional resources, supplies and materials including an entire convoy of prefab construction materials. This second wave is regarded as the saving grace for Whiteguard as it brought the materials and resources needed to get the colony self sufficient and then further to get it to the point that they could start sending shipments back to Winterhearth.
Today Whiteguard has changed a great deal from the early desperate colonial effort that struggled to cope following its first whiteout. From a small colonial, Whiteguard has grown outwards into a proper city, with numerous districts making it the second largest city in the Socialist Republic, the coal that came from the mines in Whiteguard managed to sustain the nation for several years until the discovery of oil. But that doesn't mean that coal was forsaken, rather it was reused, some were used to support the outposts and more went towards the Coal Liquification plants to provide additional sources of oil.
Millford: Major Colony
"So all may live and all may eat" Motto of Millford
Population 1927 survey: 11,350
A major food provider for the Socialist Republic, Millford was established due to the untouched sources of fertile soil that encompassed much of the area. So with limitations restricting the amount of food that the pre-existing outposts and food production districts could provide for the growing population, there was a growing interest in perhaps establishing a colony dedicated to the focus of food production.
Millford was what the nation required to support its growing population and its efforts to properly establish a true genuine nation. Learning from its failures during the initial colonisation efforts at Whiteguard, more preparations and safety measures were put into effect for the colonisation of Millford. Rather than putting all effort in quick succession, the colonial effort would start slower, first establishing a generator at the site with the construction effort being an outpost relying on standard shipments of supplies from Winterhearth.
Then a new outpost would be established to support the beginnings of a settlement at the site, building up the colony to the point that it can become self sufficient, after which at a steady pace, waves of colonists would be sent to the Colony at careful intervals and only when the colony can support them. This proved an effective method as over several months after the completion of the Generator that would serve as the heart of the Colony, the city began to take shape.
Eventually roughly two years after the first colonial settlement, Millford was a well established colony and a full fledged city for the Socialist Republic. With several districts within the city in all directions, half of these districts are dedicated to food production and waste recycling, where animal and human waste was filtered into a viable fertilizer for the hot-houses and greenhouses within those districts. As well as them there were "ranches" for reindeer rearing, which provided additional foods and materials in the form of milk, meat and leather.
Due to the limited access to fuel sources, Millford is rather reliant on fuel being shipped in for its generator, that it may maintain its efficiency as well as provide sufficient heat and power to the entire city. This is one of the drawbacks to Millford as it is totally reliant on these shipments of fuel, be it oil or coal to keep its people safe from the freezing temperatures.
But this has not stopped the city from expanding, even now the city continues to grow at a steady pace so that it does not overtake its capability to provide for its citizens.
CragFell: Major Colony
"Heating our people that all may live" Motto of Cragfell
Population 1927 survey: 12,510
A major oil provider for the Socialist Republic, Cragfell was built specifically for the vast quantities of oil both in the city limits but also in the surrounding regions. The actual site of the Cragfell is rather broken, rather than a uniform city, the original settlement that was established at the site had to work around a collection of large jagged rock formations with some larger than buildings, meant that the city had to build around these rocks.
With a lot of effort, Cragfell began to build itself up proper and efficiently, to the point that it quickly became a sustainable colony for the Socialist Republic rather quickly, mostly because it did not require extensive resupply due to it possessing plentiful of fuel for its generator and limited access to fertile soil for use in Hot Houses. This meant that the city managed to properly provide a consistent supply of oil to the other cities and settlements relatively quickly when compared to other colonies.
Today Cragfell remains as the primary provider of fuel to the Socialist Republic as a whole, whilst there are settlements that support the same effort, the majority of the Oil that the nation uses to keep the generators going, heat pumped and power supplied to the population across the different cities, towns and settlements. Though like every city in the Socialist Republic, Cragfell isn't tied to just the oil extraction and exporting, there are other businesses working within the city, from the limited food production, to coal liquification and even ordinary industries and manufacturing, though this is mostly done to provide some additional surplus for manufactured goods for the population.
For example, there is a rather large brewery industry within Cragfell, where alcohols like beer, ale and gin are made and then sold off either in the city itself or further afield across the entire nation. Obviously like all the cities, colonies, towns and settlements in the Socialist Republic, Cragfell possesses a large Rail district where the rail-lines pass through the city limits effectively bringing in supplies, resources as well as sending out the exports of the goods the city produces as well as the precious Oil.
The Pit: Penal Colony
"Endure together, for as Equals, We live" Motto of the Pit
Population 1927 survey: 8,700
Established years before the Revolution that overthrew the old leadership of Winterhearth, originally it was just a place where those who were considered criminals and threats to the survival of humanity were sent to basically die whilst they were forced to work hard labour. Conditions were extreme, there was almost no support for the prisoners sent there, as like back in Winterhearth, there was a clear class divide.
In the case of the Pit however, this was extreme, the site was constructed next to a giant crater akin to a large quarry on one side and a large mountain ridge on the other, with tall mountains on multiple sides with access into the area being only through one of two valleys that allow entry. The guards and administrators lived within close proximity of the onsite generator on a flat stretch of ground between "the Pit" and the ridge, here they maintained a watch and control over the prisoners who are forced to live down in the Pit. The only connection between the two, being an elevator that stretched from the Generator down the steep and impassable slope down to the bottom of the Pit.
There the prisoners were forced to work harvesting coal, iron, stone as well as working the small smelting facilities that turned the iron into workable steel. These poor souls were forced to live in tents with the only heat given to them being a small heating pump that barely provided enough heating for them all. Those who died from the back breaking work and the brutal conditions, were simply dumped in mass graves not far from the site.
Following the revolution in Winterhearth, its placement as a Penal Colony was continued, but in a more controlled manner, the brutal conditions at the Pit were removed. The intention of the new government was to continuing using the Pit as a place to send convicted criminals but not in the extremes, rather the prisoners in the Pit would continue working as a force for labour in the Colony, but no longer would they be forced to live in tents with little heat and simple food rations.
Rather the Penal Colony at the Pit is rather simply a place where the average criminals are sent for the duration of their sentence, after which they are allowed to return home back into society. Whilst there though, they would live in shared bunkhouses and would be restricted to "The Pit" until their sentence is completed or they are approved for Parole. Those who are Paroled are not immediately allowed to return home, rather they stay at the colony though as an average citizen in the city that sits on the cusp of "The Pit" prison, until their parole is completed or they violate their parole and are sent back down to the prison.
The Colony remains as a provider of various resources, specifically iron and stone which is mined and refined by prisoner labour at the bottom of "The Pit" before being exported out via the Railway.
Settlements and Towns:
Similar to other nations in the known Frostlands, the Socialist Republic of Winterhearth, colonised the frozen wilderness with both full fledged cities, but also settlements and towns on a smaller and limited scale.
As with other nations, most of these towns and settlements were established with the focus of a specific resource or means of production. As with the major cities, these towns and settlements are linked together with each other as well as the cities through the interwoven railway lines that the nation uses to transport goods, materials, resources and of course passengers.
Glockmore: Town
"Strong Metal forges a Strong Nation" Motto of Glockmore
Population 1927 survey: 2,615
A town established due to its close access to a considerable source of raw minerals, Glockmore started off as a resource extraction outpost by the old leadership and that outpost ignored entirely most of the minerals that were not considered useful. So rather than extracting iron, lead, magnesium etc, the outpost worked solely to provide coal and little else, as the old leadership considered everything else secondary.
Following the Revolution, efforts to expand the mining operations at the site were undertaken, as the need for additional resources needed for the rebuilding efforts in Winterhearth. This meant that the number of people working there increased, to the point that eventually Winterhearth decided to make the site a permanent settlement rather than a simple outpost that was solely reliant on resupply from the city.
Over time, the Settlement expanded not just its mining efforts but also its housing and food production means, enabling it to provide a viable living standard for the residents. Eventually the town was able to produce enough food in its own hothouses to at least support their population on a small scale, though they still required additional supplies being brought in. As well as this, the simple living quarters were overtaken by proper homes, in the form of bunkhouses which were divided into apartments, with one family living on the ground floor, whilst another would live on the second floor and another on the third.
Today the town continues to prosper on the mining efforts both in the town but also close by, where all manner of raw minerals are brought in to be sent on to be put through smelters and forges in the cities. Among these minerals are Iron, magnesium, lead, nickel, copper and even some zinc.
Skipford: Town
"We Forge the Links that Keep Us Together" Motto of Skipford
Population 1927 survey: 1,870
Skipford is a settlement that was established due to the presence of industrial buildings that had been left behind during the "Last Autumn", there were various production lines and factories to serve some purpose. It is unknown exactly which nation the site originally belonged too, some think it was in support of the French effort to build a ever moving train around the world, then there is also the theory that it was built by the Americans to help build Telsa Town, but there is no definitive proof as to who built the factories and production lines at the site.
Regardless as to whom built the initial site, the Socialist Republic found it and claimed for themselves, seeing an advantage to the various factories that had been abandoned and left to be claimed by the wilderness. They established an outpost with the intention of building a viable settlement at the site, slowly they built up hothouses, proper housing, a rail line to connect it to the rest of the nation and more.
Due to its limited access to sources of fuel, it requires regular shipments of coal and oil to support its generator to ensure that the population are kept safe from the cold. But this supported by the very factories themselves as the smelters and other machinery produce heat as they work, said heat is used to provide additional help for the residents of the town.
One of the biggest industries in Skipford is the rail servicing, where factories produce the spare parts and tools needed to keep the trains that are the main form of transit and transport for the nation. Today the town remains strong, providing all the materials that the Socialist Republic needs to maintain its rail network, the people are said to be proud of their work.
Broadbarrow: Town
Population 1927 survey: 2,342
A town near the border with the Commonwealth of New London, Broadbarrow is the latest colonial effort in the Socialist Republic, originally, the site was used as a military outpost and base during the fighting between the two nations during the Frostland wars. The settlement housed members of the R.F.W [Revolutionary Forces of Winterhearth], as well as a hospital for wounded, warehouses and stockpiles for munitions and supplies as well as of course bunkhouses for the troops.
However when the Commonwealth and the Socialist Republic signed a formal peace treaty which included the opening of a trade agreement, the town was restructured to support this new economic effort over military focus. The old military structures were removed or turned into other structures, for example the R.F.W headquarters became the towns number 1 inn and tavern for the locals as wells visitors. The warehouses and stockpiles were cleared of everything to do with the R.F.W, so no weapons, no munitions etc, instead they are now used to store cargo and trade goods from both nations.
Today the town is a bustling trade hub between the two nations, it possesses a huge market square with shops and stalls by the dozens if not more all on properly paved floors. Nearly everything can be found within the shops and businesses that have a place here at Broadbarrow, from Commonwealth manufactured goods to those built in the Socialist Republic. And the town has experienced a period of intense growth, as the economy grows with it, over the years a small settlement has become a true town and continues to grow.
In fact the growth of the town is so evident, that the Socialist Republic is considering to re-evaluate it, rather than classifying it as a Town they are considering to make it into an official city and colony of the Socialist Republic of Winterhearth.
Chiselguard: Military Fortress
"Defence for the Revolution" Motto of Chiselguard
Population 1927 survey: 1,000
Established years ago by the old Leadership, Chiselguard sits at the only large access route into Winterhearth, though there are many ways into the city, the largest has to go past Chiselguard, making it a literal gateway to the capital.
The initial founding of the settlement was done by the old leadership, it was to serve as a logistics station for people moving in and out of the city, specifically scout units, outpost crews, resource shipments etc. This was hurriedly abandoned during the revolution and the subsequent rebuilding in the city, it was only reclaimed after Winterhearth had begun to heal and required to start moving back out into the Frostlands to find and gather resources.
When the Socialist Republic encountered the other nations in the Frostlands, specifically the strong hierarchal nation of the Sovereignty, there were some concerns that other nations might try to impose power over Winterhearth. So as the Frostland wars began to start erupting across the frozen wilderness, Winterhearth started to plan and then construct a massive fortification at the main entrance to the city. The fortress is situated at the heart of the break in the mountains, the half way point between both sides, this means it can easily protect the entire pass with little difficulty.
All the main rail lines pass on either side, so nearly everything that the Capitol city needs comes past the Fortress of Chiselguard, which has raised concerns in the past, due to the fears that one wrong step could result in a mutiny in the fort which could stop all trains passing by. But such has never occurred in the history of the Socialist Republic following the Revolution.
The fortress is intricately built, structured similar to a large star shaped fort, Chisel Guard has all of its strongest defences focused outwards towards the wilderness, ready to repel any aggressor to the capitol. The main fort is primed with a mixture of weaponry, heavy cannons along the walls, heavy mortars within, maxim machine guns at regular points. As well as these, due to the fact that all known nations in the frostlands are starting to create fleets of militarized airships to mirror those of the Commonwealth of New London, the Fortress possesses at regular points around it, several anti aircraft batteries that fire explosive shells that can take down an airship before it can begin to drop its bombs.
In fact some would say that Chiselguard is a fortress within a fort, for the entire Fort is layered. The main fortress at its heart, then there is a second line of walls surrounding it, these are supported by a number of ravelins, ice trenches, ditches etc. Everything about Chiselguard is meant to provide the securest defence for the city behind it.
Although Chiselguard is situated very close to the capitol city, it is rather self sustaining to an extent, whilst it is reliant on shipments of fuel and raw materials to support it, the fort has dedicated greenhouses within the walls, allowing it to provide the garrison within a fresh supply of food. Within the heart of the fortress is also manufacturing and production, so the fort if properly supplied can produce weapons, munitions for the troops to keep on fighting.
In recent years, the Fortress has been expanded on one side, specifically the side closest to the city, this is due to the birth of the Revolutionary Aerial Defence or R.A.D. A copy of the Commonwealth of New Londons Air-Corps. Both the steward and the Politbureau having witnessed the effectiveness of the New London Air-Corps decided to work in creating its own version and the R.A.D was born, airships that had previously served to scout the Frostlands or seek out resources were refitted into military service.
At Chiselguard Fortress there is an R.A.D airstation where airships are maintained, crews rest, new recruits trained, supplies loaded, munitions restocked. As well as new aircraft built to replace those that are too damaged to continue service and old ones dismantled when the time comes.
Dreadburn: Military Fortress
"Holding the Line" Motto of Dreadburn
Population 1927 survey: 1,000
The northern most stronghold of the Socialist Republic, Dreadburn was built during the Frostland Wars, its sole purpose was to project power over the region around it and defend the state against the aggressive attacks of the Sovereignty of New Albion.
During the Frostland Wars, the Sovereignty and Winterhearth were embroiled in bitter fighting both for territory, access to resources but also over ideology. As the two states represent two sides of the political spectrum, Authority and Equality, conflict was inevitable. To protect its place in the region, as well as the nearby settlement and outposts, Winterhearth ordered the construction of a dedicated fortress to protect the border territory from Sovereignty incursions.
During the conflicts with the Sovereignty, the Fortress served as the headquarters for the R.F.W, from Dreadburn troops would disembark the main train lines and then travel further, either to outlaying camps or directly up to the front. As well as a command headquarters, the Fortress also served and continues to serve as a supply hub for the R.F.W in the region.
The fortress is well and truly built and defensive, high strong walls with cannons, mortars, maxim machine guns, ravelins, ice trenches, ditches, every form of defence that would make Dreadburn all the more secure was put into its construction. Its given additional defence in the form of natural geography, Dreadburn is situated atop a high plateau with a steep slope on one side and sheer cliffs on the other three, meaning access is only capable from one direction and any who try must ascend through the sights of cannons and mortars.
And to even reach the route up the slope, any attacker must first take a ravelin at the bottom which serves as the first line in the defences, that too is protected with light artillery and embedded maxim machine guns. For added defence, both the lower ravelin and the main fortress possess anti aircraft cannons to deter any kind of aerial attack, in addition to a section that had been extended to allow for R.A.D airships to dock, rest their crews, resupply and reload munitions.
In its times, the fortress has experienced a number of attacks by the Sovereignty including at least two major attempts to lay siege and actually capture the Fortress. Today Dreadburn stands as the ultimate stronghold for the Socialist Republic in its ongoing border dispute and occasional skirmishes with the Sovereignty. There is constant activity at the Fortress, with troops conducting patrols to smaller border forts and defensive stations, as well as Airships constantly coming and going.
Rookmere: Penal Settlement
Population 1927 survey: 1,900
Similar in respect to "The Pit", Rookmere is also extremely different when compared to the much large Penal Colony. Whilst everyday criminals and convicts are sent to The Pit to be reformed and serve their sentences, Rookmere is very different, the saying in the Socialist Republic is that you don't send normal people to Rookmere, for if you send them there, they are sent to die there.
Rookmere serves as the most extreme prison system in the Socialist Republic of Winterhearth, founded following the Revolution, the settlement was where the captured leadership and their supporters were sent to spend the rest of their lives performing hard labour. The entire site was built up by their labour, the generator to provide heat, the buildings, the very prison itself that they were to live within.
Later following the proper establishment of the site, Rookmere became the maximum security prison for the Socialist Republic, a place where the worst criminals are sentenced to be sent to. The site is not intended for any kind of person that is deemed capable of reform or returning to society, those who are sentenced to the Rookmere Penal settlement are the worst of the worst. Forever bound to spend the rest of their lives performing hard labour, working mines, the nearby quarry etc.
The following are examples of crimes that can result in a person being sentenced to Rookmere:
- Murder - Serial Murder
- Serial Sexual Offenders
- Terrorism
- Treason
- Mutiny
- War Crimes
- Sabotage to Generators
Whilst other settlements and cities possess numerous rail lines that connect to different parts of the nation, but Rookmere is very different, it holds only a single line and that one line is the sole means of reaching the prison besides walking across the frozen wilderness. At the heart of the settlement is a giant Panopticon, where the guards maintain a complete 360 degree view of the entire settlement ready to react at a moments notice to trouble or disturbance.
Outposts:
As with all nations, the Socialist Republic of Winterhearth has established a number of outposts across the regions of the Frostlands that are recognised within their borders. These outposts are varied in their purposes, some are focused around the extraction of a specific resource, others serve as frontier posts for the R.FW and so on.
The only thing that all these Outposts have in common is that they are all reliant on supplies of food, materials and fuels from either a settlement or a city for their survival. Though this is not a severe as some might believe, as these Outposts are all placed along the rail lines that link the different parts of the nation together.
Resource Outposts:
Population 1927 Survey: Average of 50
In total as of this record, the Socialist Republic has 79 active resource outposts, all of them are established with the singular purpose of extracting a resource specific to their individual locations.
All of these Outposts are built either directly along the Rail lines, or have a link to it via a nearest Rail Station, usually a frost-trail for vehicles. But all Resource Outposts are set to their extraction. Due to the simple matter that the Outposts are tied to resupply coming from settlements and cities, which is why they are manned specifically by volunteer workers and even on a rotation basis, spending a few weeks working then spending an equal amount of time at the nearest settlement or city.
This means that on average according to the law of the Socialist Republic, Outpost crews can only work at their designated Outpost for no more than five weeks, extensions are permitted but only by authorised permission and even then the workers must be compensated. Though such extensions are only done in extreme situations and emergencies when the state is in desperate need of the resources coming in from the outposts.
Rail Stations:
Population 1927 survey: Average of 150
At the time of this record, there are a total of 9 Rail-stations in the Socialist Republic, these are built to a similar manner as the train stations and stops of the old world. But with several additional buildings being established around the actual station, these include repair facilities, smithy's to maintain the trains as and when they are needed, but also vehicles that allow the repair crews to move along the lines in their area in order to perform repairs and in extreme situations replacements.
These Rail stations are stretched along the different rail lines in the Socialist Republic, all of them to provide support to the trains as they move back and forth, but others also are connection points for other outposts. For instance if a resource extraction outpost is too far from the rail lines for a direct connection, then a frost-trail is built connecting it to the nearest station, enabling the transportation of resources, supplies and of course people.
Some rail stations are positioned at junction points, where different routes are connected, so to provide an easier means of ensuring that a certain train gets to where it needs to go. But also for refueling, here coal is stored as well as other fuels, so as Trains go one way or the other, if required, the trains can resupply their fuel sources so there is little danger of them running out as they move along the lines.
Finally all Rail Stations have in duty, snow and ice clearing trains, these are much larger ploughs that are used to clear the tracks on a regular basis and not just following a whiteout. Rail Stations are also responsible for ensuring that in the event a specific line is not passable for a train, then an divergence is established so that the transportation of goods, materials, resources and supplies is not held back.
Frontier Forts:
Population 1927 survey: Average of 300
In total there are 6 Frontier Forts in the Socialist Republic, these are spread out specifically along the recognised borders of the Socialist Republic to guard against any incursions as well as serve as hubs for military forces.
There are two forts along the border with the Divine Autocracy, one close to the Border with the Commonwealth, but three are along Winterhearths border with New Albion. These forts are not as large or impressive as the main fortress settlements that the nation has established, Forts Chiselguard and Dreadburn.
These are smaller fortifications that were established to serve akin to frontier stations for the military forces of the nation. Whilst not as built up as the main fortresses, they serve a similar role, to provide a safe sanctum for the R.F.W as well as the R.A.D to perform patrols along the borders and in times of war to serve as strongholds against the enemy. The forts are not impressive, they are basic designs, similar to those forts used during the days of the British Empire before the freeze, solid stone walls shaped akin to a star and heavy guns along the battlements at regular intervals.
Though smaller they are defensible as the placement of the forts makes sure of that, some are placed on high points with commanding views of the surroundings, others are placed against the edges of cliffs and so on. As with the case of other nations, these frontier forts have small "docks" for airships of the R.A.D to resupply their airships as well as to allow for repairs.
All of these frontier forts, especially those along the Sovereignty border were originally established during the Frostland wars, when there were constant battles between nations for control over certain regions. Since at the time, the Socialist Republic was focused on rebuilding following their revolution, the nation was more defensive than most other nations.
This concludes the basic information on the Cities, Towns, Settlements and Outposts that make up the Socialist Republic of Winterhearth as of the year of our lord 1927.
The next documents in line shall detail the Sovereignty of New Albion, The Victorian Free State, the Republic of Glacias, The New American State, The Celtic Union, The Russian Enclave, The Frankian Alliance and the Prussian State.
[ These are yet to be written but the point is, that I intend to make similar short stories like this one in this specific order.]
