Roma Eterna... Legio Victrix: Character Sheet
[ This story is loosely based on the Expeditions Rome game where the player takes on the role of a character similar to Julius Caesar and undergoes a journey through an alternative history of the rise or fall of the Roman Empire. Whilst this story tries to stick to the games plot, elements of it are fictionalised from my personal imagination. Also as a bit of fun I thought to describe characters along their names in actual Latin. Don't worry the translation is next.
As well as this I must warn that this Character sheet will include some spoilers for the eventual Story when I choose to properly write it. So be warned. Though I have tried to maintain historical Roman Republic/Empire, certain areas I have altered for the sake of simplicity though these more fictionalised points shall try and honour elements of true history.

Romans: Familia
An old Patrician family, the Aquila are a family of wealth, power and influence, they are the proud owners of an expansive Vineyard where the most succulent of grapes are grown and turned to the finest wines.
The wealth they obtain from its sales have allowed them to live in a expensive villa in the heart of Rome itself among the other wealthy families and give them the power to expand their "Portfolio" so to speak into other enterprises.
Now the family stands at the edge of losing all that they have achieved, with everyone having to rely on Arcturus to prevent the end.
Quintus Tiberius Aquila - Pater - The Father
Before his untimely and peaceful passing from this world, Quintus Aquila was regarded as a legend within the Republic, whether it be within the halls of the Senate or among the Plebs, respect followed him.
Coming from a patrician family, Quintus had a privileged upbringing being tutored by the finest scholars and granted access to the finest libraries across Rome. Quintus was pushed by his father Arcturus the Elder (as he was later known as), to become a prominent member of the Senate and continue the families legacy onwards. To aid in this endeavour Arcturus the Elder arranged a political marriage for his son and heir to another Patrician family, the Helios's daughter Luvenia.
Though the marriage was indeed political and advantageous for both families, the Helios were gifted a generous dowry, the Aquila were able to increase their influence in the wider Patrician families thus increasing their power. Quintus and Luvenia would come to care about each other rather deeply, with some saying that the two became a truly loving wedded couple that were crafted by the gods for each other.
After his Paters death however Quintus went on even further, he turned the families Vineyard into a thriving enterprise with grapes being either sold onto market or turned to the finest wines. He purchased several warehouses which he would Lease out to those requiring them thus increasing the families earnings each month.
Eventually Quintus would become the proud father of two children a Daughter and a Son in that order to be specific, unlike Arcturus the Elder who always determined the path his son undertook, Quintus was more open and caring about his children, whilst other children were scorned for playing with slaves. Quintus had no trouble allowing his children to play with the offspring of the slaves he owned, an old friend even stated that he would often laugh at the sight of the children playing in courtyard of their villa or playing "Hide and Seek" in the Garden.
Despite his loving familial side Quintus was a hardened servant of the Republic, being elected to the Senate for life by the people of Rome. After his election Roman General Sulla marched on Rome and seized power, thankfully Quintus was able to survive the various arrests and executions conducted on the orders of Sulla.
After Sulla' death his one great wish was for what he deemed to be the failures of the Republic to be addressed within the halls of the Senate and the matters fixed before what he called the "Decline" began which believed was inevitable if the Republic continued along its current path.
With this pursuit he gained a number allies within the Republic all whom had the same long term goal of upholding the Republic and restoring the pride of Rome that was slowly falling into the shadows of those seeking only power. Among them was a long time friend Lucius Lucullus, whom Quintus supported in the vote to see him become elected one of the two Consuls of Rome. As well as this Quintus enjoyed walking the streets of Rome and talking to the people he came across, even when there was no need to he often enjoyed wandering the markets with his wife and children.
Unlike other nobles who walked around the city with bodyguards alongside them or upon litters carried by servants or slaves. Quintus instead liked to actually walk the streets meeting people, this was one of the reasons he was so respected by the populace, because he never had any qualms about actually being seen with them.
However during this same time, Quintus discovered from his "Eyes and Ears" that someone was manipulating the system of the Roman Republic to obtain more and more political power. With some suspicion that the Person or persons was secretly inciting conflict across the provinces and hardships within Rome to achieve it.
Yet before matters could come to a head, Mithridates the King of Pontus launched an attack on the Province of Asia Minor and had managed to convince several cities within the province to join his side in the conflict. Consuls Lucius Lucullus and Marcus Cotta had to leave Rome to lead the legions against the invasion, leaving Quintus vulnerable as he now lacked his most powerful allies.
Soon after Tiberius Vitellius proposed a marriage between himself and Quintus's daughter Lusitania, being Cautious Quintus chose to withhold his answer until as he claimed "Could consult with his Wife and Daughter on their opinion".
A day later, Quintus was found dead in his bed, apparently having passed away in his sleep and his Will had mysteriously disappeared. However his final stroke of genius was revealed after his death, whilst many expected him to name his long time friend and ally Lucius Lucullus to be the executor of his will, before Mithridates had attacked. Quintus had instead asked Marcus Tullius Cicero to not only be the Executor of his will but also its barer.
Luvenia Julia Aquila - Mater - The Mother
Born into a old and noble family that could allegedly trace itself towards the age of Troy, yet by the time of Luvenia's birth and raising. The family had become what is now referred to as Land poor, the Helios Family had a great number of land holdings across Italy and in the other provinces but lacked the needed financing to make the lands profitable for them.
Luvenia was raised by her family in the traditional sense of a Roman woman of noble heritage, every aspect of her life was strictly monitored and controlled from her tutoring and her personal life. As was the case in the age of Rome, the higher a woman was in society the lesser choice they had in their own lives, as was the case with Luvenia.
Eventually through their family connections she was betrothed and later wedded to another Patrician family the Aquila in return for a generous dowry from the Aquila family. Like her Husband, Luvenia enjoyed walking the streets of Rome, something she had never really been able to enjoy growing up. Now Quintus was showing her a world that she could only glimpse from Carriages, Litters or balconies, though she did exclaim one time how she always felt strange walking the streets in expensive clothing and jewels.
With Quintus, Luvenia would bare two children a daughter and a Son born upon the same day. The Pair had grown to care for each other a great deal despite the arranged marriage and out of respect for the other, they both shared the privilege of naming their children. Luvenia chose the name for their Daughter choosing Lusitania after a close friend of hers who had passed many years before.
As a mother Luvenia showed her true strength, being ever caring and loving to both her children equally something that had been refused to her when she was being raised alongside her two brothers. She arranged for the purchasing of a tutor for the children, though the man would be a slave, the teacher would not be treated as such.
Alongside this she became renowned among the family friends and other Patrician families for her skill in planning of feasts, banquets and "Parties" that the Aquila would host at their villa. She would often spend much time in the preparation of such events, when Lucius Lucullus and Marcus Cotta were invited to a "Joyous Gathering" at the villa alongside other senators and their families. Luvenia spent nearly an entire two weeks planning and arranging every detail from the decoration to entertainment to the food and wine that would be served.
Luvenia was heartbroken upon the death of her husband, though the marriage was indeed arranged, she had come to care for and love Quintus very much. It was she that made the assumption upon Tiberius Vitellius marriage to her beloved daughter that either he or his brother had poisoned her husband in order to achieve such a goal, matters would only made worse when Quintus's will had mysteriously vanished. Using her friends and that of her now deceased Husbands she arranged for her son to be secreted from Rome and into the care of Consul Lucius Lucullus.
All the while she was forced to remain within the Aquila Villa where under the guard of Vitellius guards she was not permitted to even leave her home until the matter of Pater Familias was sorted by the Senate. There she remained though as the matter was not settled she was by law still the mistress of the Villa and as such could not be removed, so she stayed being attended too by the family servants and slaves.
It was not until the return of Arcturus from the Asia Minor Campaign that the Senate finally made its decision, Due to the actions undertaken by Arcturus during the campaign alongside the revelation that Marcus Tullius Cicero had been requested by Quintus to be the barer and executor of his final will. The Senate ordered the immediate removal of the guards watching over and denying entry to Arcturus into his own family villa as well as recognising him as the new Pater Familia for the Aquila and as such the rightful owner of the Villa and all properties, lands and wealth of his father.
With her son returned to her with honour, prestige and influence behind him, Luvenia finally had some semblance of hope for her family again. Though Tiberius still was Married to Lusitania and was not able to return home, She maintained some hope that the family will be reunited one day. Until then she remained in the Aquila Villa being the supportive and loving mother she was to her son, whilst also giving her advice upon what he should do on certain matters.
Lusitania Flora Aquila - Soror - The Sister
The older of the twins, Lusitania was born only a few minutes before her brother, something that she always enjoyed making known much to the amusement of the family. She was named by her mother after a close friend of her past who had died young, though it would seem morbid for some, Lusitania took the name as an Honour to uphold.
Like her Brother Lusitania enjoyed all matters of play, despite the opinions of some outside the family. The Aquila parents never had any qualms in regards of their two children playing games or having fun with the children of the servants or slaves in the villa, from these young slaves and future servants the twins would gain two strong bonds of friendship which would last them for the rest of their lives.
As she grew Lusitania began to show signs of exceptional beauty which was often commented by those around her much to the chagrin of her parents who often had to listen to such remarks. Once she reached a certain age however, these remarks began to change from simple comments to queries of proposals on the matter of marriage, with many influential family Paters offering their sons as a viable option for her as a husband.
This became a regular occurrence for her parents with many seeking to marry her with the obvious intent of using the marriage to obtain greater public and political influence. For years her father Quintus was able to resist these attempts and bargaining ploys by the other rich and patrician families of Italy, his wish was to grant his daughter a say in her marital placement.
Sadly this was lost after the passing of her father, not long after the proposal of Tiberius Cassius Vitellius for her hand in marriage. After her fathers death, Tiberius went through with the marriage and used it as an excuse to stake a claim to the families wealth, property and prestige. Lusitania was forced to leave the Aquila Villa and move to her new husbands villa on the outskirts of the city, there she would remain under almost constant guard of the Vitellius "Guards". Whenever she was permitted to leave it was always in the presence of some guards under her husbands employ or her Brother in Law, Lurco.
Upon the return of her brother from the Campaigns in Asia Minor and the reclaiming of the families home and wealth, Lusitania was still unable to return home as her marriage made it impractical. But she managed to find a way to make such a matter work for her family, she became a willing spy within the Vitellius house hold listening in with the aid of one of her most trusted slave. When she could Lusitania passed on the information to her brother either directly or through a confidant.
It was she who learned and passed on the information of the Vitellius brothers involvement in North Africa and the possibility of some secret dealings between them and Egypt.
Arcturus Helios Aquila - Primus in Fabula - the Primus of the Story
Second Child of the Aquila Family and by rights the heir to the families prestige and fortune upon his ascent to the head of the family. Arcturus was a mixed child growing up, whilst he indeed played with wooden swords with his friends pretending to be legionnaires at war, his true passion was in become learned like his father.
As he grew up Arcturus began to show the less traditional manner of thinking when compared to other children his age. Whilst many of the other boys his age during his days of tutelage were interested in following on the ideals of accumulating wealth and influence in the Republic, Arcturus was more interested in People. Through his teacher Syneros, he learned of the various Greek philosophers notably Socrates. He was fascinated with some of the quotes he learned as well as what he thought they meant, quotes like "the only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing", which he believed meant that a person can never truly know anything as there are so many variables to consider as such a person knows nothing.
But the two lessons of Socrates tutored to him by Syneros were "There is only one Good, Knowledge and one Evil, Ignorance" which he took greatly to his memory. When he shared it with his father, Quintus was pleased to see his son attempting to learn this as it was something he believed to a failure of the Roman Republic "Ignorance".
The Lesson that struck him the most however was that "Be Kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle" Arcturus revelled in this idea, because he somewhat understood it. He learned from the stories his father told him of the wars between Rome and Carthage, of how many thousands died in countless battles, of how Rome nearly fell when Hannibal lead his army across the Alpes. Arcturus took these three lessons to heart and made his conclusion to be the belief that Ignorance breeds Deceit and Chaos, as hatred fuels violence and death.
But Kindness breeds trust as Generosity breeds hope and faith.
As the years went on, Arcturus began to turn these teachings to his wider world. After his 14th birthday he began to aid his father in the running of the family Vineyards which his father greatly approved, though he always ensured his son was also trained to defend himself just in case. But Quintus liked that his only son was more interested in the plebs and the workings of the vineyard, not only because it gave him pride for his son but also it allowed him to focus his efforts on the Senate.
A collector by heart, but not one to be expected, many were collectors in Rome. But usually such things were of great worth, such as pieces of art, paintings, sculptures of stone and metal etc. Arcturus on the other hand was a collector of the little things, he enjoyed collecting Plants from far away lands and planting them in the Garden of the Villa.
Sadly after Arcturus and his sister turned 16 things changed for the worse as their father passed in his sleep. Lusitania was swiftly claimed and married by Tiberius Vitellius and Arcturus was forced to leave Rome under the cover of night for his safety. Aided by his tutor and a new friend Caeso he was taken to the port of Ostia where he boarded a ship for the island of Lesbos where he was to serve alongside Pro Consul Lucius Lucullus.
Whilst aboard the ship however Arcturus did not sit in silence and wish for home, he decided to focus his mind on matters he could do. From those onboard he began to learn, Syneros continued his lessons of logic and understanding, whilst Caeso and another passenger a former Gladiator Bestia trained him to fight.
During his time in the campaign he took what he had learned over his life and put it into practice, certain individuals who were formally his enemies were convinced to side with him and Rome in the war. With the permission of Lucullus he was able to muster almost an additional legion from Greeks and Rebel Gladiators in exchange for their freedom, an Auxiliary legion that proved their worth in many battles, they were given the name "Legio Graecorum", the Legion of Greeks.
Throughout the Campaigns, Arcturus maintained a series of reforms when it came to the matter of leadership and command. Unlike other Legions where most positions of command and officers were held by Notable Roman aristocrats or their sons. Arcturus held to the idea that a command must be earned, this was shown after the failure to take Mytilene, where he witnessed the officers and Commanders lost on what to do, but the veteran legionnaires held firm and aided in the reorganisation. So he made it a point to promote based not on an individuals wealth, but instead on a persons experience and skills. He remarked to those who questioned saying "Leadership should be based on Ability... not Class".
After several weeks which turned into months, He would return from Asia Minor as a famed hero of the Campaign. Having commanded his own Legion in various battles against Mithridates and the Greeks that had sided with him, he had earned the gratitude of Legatus Thermus and Pro Consul Marcus Cotta for his efforts in saving both their lives. And finally he had personally defeated Mithridates in single combat and captured him alive to be returned to Rome.
Upon his return the first matter he attended to was gaining the support of the Senate in the continued matter of his Family Villa, wealth, properties and prestige. Upon the revealing of his fathers last will by Cicero, the Senate ratified that Arcturus was the new head of the Aquila Family and returned all properties, wealth and items that had rightfully belonged to his father.
In the weeks after, Arcturus would dedicate his time to helping the former members of his Legion as well as his friends in getting their lives back together. He offered jobs to the former members of Legio Victrix in the Aquila Vineyard or in various other jobs needed, as well as this he made his case to the Senate on regards of the Auxiliary legion he had mustered during his time in Asia Minor, though some questioned him recruiting non Romans and escaped Gladiators into their ranks and teaching them Roman tactics, no one could deny the result.
This was made all the more clear when Arcturus with the permission of the two Consuls made a point on regards of the so called "Legio Graecorum" . He remarked that the people of that Legion knew the land, they knew the people, they knew the Customs, such a force could enforce order and instil Roman power without the clear appearance of a foreign army.
In the years following the peace in Asia Minor, Arcturus lived relatively quiet, though he did keep a close eye on his sister who remained married to Tiberius. As well as this, he continued to maintain close correspondence with the "Associates" he had made in Asia Minor too see how things were doing and maintain the friendships he had made over there.
However this peaceful life changed when he was alerted by his sister that the Vitellius Brothers were up to something in North Africa specifically Egypt. A matter made worse when he was personally requested by Lucius Lucullus who was now serving as the Governor of the North Africa Province (Modern Day Eastern Libya/ Western Egypt). He was requested to bring him, his associates as well as Legio Victrix to aid him, with permission of the Senate, Arcturus left to support a surrogate father figure in need.
Though sadly they arrived too late, Lucullus had already been assassinated by Egyptian soldiers dressed as Roman Legionnaires. With the permission of the Senate, Arcturus lead his legion and a newly formed Auxiliary Legion into Egypt to remove Ptolemy from the Throne. During the campaign Arcturus would begin a close companionship with his chief ally Queen Cleopatra, such closeness came clear when during an Egyptian raid on the camp Arcturus took a dagger to his side trying to protect her. He would take a fever and was bed ridden for several days while he recovered, all the while his companions tried to help him as well as Queen Cleopatra.
Rome: Amici et Servi - Friends and Servants
Some would say that in Rome friends are few and far between, some would even say that there is no such thing as a friend in Roman society as one must always be ready to turn against their supposed friends when the time comes.
But there are always some that can be trusted whomever they may be, Arcturus can rely on some within Rome itself that he can call his friends.
Mira: Familae Servus- Family Slave
One of untold countless who were born into slavery Mira was born to a family of long term enslavement, her ancestors only a few generations before had been captured during the Roman conquest of Carthage. Mira however was fortunate being born from an enslaved family that served more "Benevolent" masters, she was born to serve the Aquila Family that always treated their slaves with a "lesser hand" when it came to ensuring the position of master and slave was maintained.
Whereas other masters would have strictly prohibited the inclusion of their slaves children playing and having fun with theirs. The Aquila parents had no qualms, Mira was referred to others by the Twins not as their slave but as their friend, something that always cheered her up. But like other children born to slavery she still had tasks to complete each day, but yet again the kindness of the Aquila Family always made sure that the children never performed tasks beyond their means, usually Mira helped the family with retrieving simple things that she could easily carry. As she grew alongside the Twins, her service merely increased as she was no longer a child she could perform the duties expected of her. Mostly she assisted in the serving of meals for the family as well as the following clean up, as well as working with the other servants in more everyday tasks unless there was a party being hosted at the Villa. In which she would serve to help prepare and later serve wine to the Guests. During which there were many offers to Quintus her legal owner to purchase her or to have some "Quality time" with her, these offers were swiftly refused with Quintus exclaiming "She is as much a child of this family as my own" .
Fears were present when Quintus passed in his sleep however as the matter of her ownership came into question, Tiberius Vitellius was making claims that he was the new owner of all properties of the Aquila family. But the matter was not properly clear as Arcturus was still legally alive and had an equal claim, the challenge only ended on Arcturus' return from Asia Minor and the revealing of his fathers will.
All properties, wealth and slaves were passed on to Arcturus in his will which included Mira, this made her grateful for her former master as it was clear she would be staying with the Aquila. She greeted her new master alongside Luvenia when he returned and was greeted in turn like a sister.
She continued to serve the Aquila family becoming a trusted confidant and friend to both Arcturus and his mother, when Arcturus was called to North Africa, he asked Mira to look after his mother and keep an eye out for his sister.
Navena Atticus: Pueritia Amicus - Childhood Friend
The best friend of Lusitania growing up, Navena was a common sight in the Aquila Villa during the childhood years often playing with the twins in the gardens or through the various rooms of the Villa's interior. Her parents were long standing friends of Quintus Aquila and were common sights at festive gatherings the Aquila hosted or vice versa.
There were common discussions among the other Patrician families present, that the two families were intending on conducting an arranged marriage between the two young children, Navena and Arcturus. But when someone let such comments slip, Quintus and Luvenia made it clear that they would never do such an act without the opinion and consent of their son.
After this outburst some difficulties arose between the families, Navena's father was given the governorship of a region in Carthage, her brother was allowed to remain in Rome under the tutelage of his Uncle but Navena had to join her parents in the move to Carthage. Despite this though she remained friends with both twins, with both sides writing letters and arranging of gifts for birthdays.
Mere weeks later however Navena and her brother were shattered when their father suffered a serious injury which eventually claimed him. Whilst walking a street a large piece of stone being lifted had slipped and struck his chest, the Aquila family mourned alongside their friends and offered what they could to help. Navena and her mother moved to the family summer Villa near Syracuse in Sicily, they would only return a few years later when they learned of Quintus' passing.
Navena was saddened to see her best friend go through the same struggle and only worse when she was married to Tiberius, she secretly became an ally for Lusitania. Using her visits to see her best friend as an excuse to check on her and make sure she was safe, whilst also allowing the passage of information from Lusitania to her mother and brother.
Septimius Atticus: politicus, senator, amicus - Statesmen, Senator, Friend
Navena's older and ambitious older brother, Septimius was like his sister in being a common sight at the Aquila Villa, though often for different reasons. Though he definitly enjoyed the times they played together, he was often present when Arcturus had his lessons, though he had lessons of his own at home. The families had no quarrels of Septimius getting some extra alongside his friend.
From a young age, it was his dream to go into the Senate just like his father and Uncle, so much of his focus was on the lessons that gave information and understanding of politics and the workings of the Senate. When his father was made a Governor, he did not journey with the his father, sister and mother to Carthage but instead was allowed to remain in Rome with his Uncle Cicero to continue his lessons and learn from a "Master" of politics and Law.
Upon his fathers death, Septimius worked all the more harder, wanting to live up to his fathers legacy of serving the Republic and the Senate. Eventually a year before the Campaigns in Asia Minor began, he was with the help of Quintus Aquila, elected to the Senate where he served as a moderate between the Conservatives and the Reformists.
When he learned of Quintus' passing he like Luvenia was suspicious merely a few years apart two prominent individuals of the Republic who had been long standing allies had died both in rather mysterious circumstances. Though he made the point to the Senate that the sudden death of Quintus Aquila must be investigated, the majority were against it as there was no sign of Foul play.
But this did not stop Septimius remembering his friends, when Arcturus returned from the Campaigns, he stood up and represented his old friend in the Senate on various matters, notably the restoration of him as the rightful heir to all of Quintus' estates as well as the recognition of the Auxiliary force known as legio Graecorum. Which Arcturus was always grateful for, when questioned why he would risk so much for him Septimius replied "Just like you I remember my friends".
He would continue to serve as a member of the Senate, when he was informed of the request of Pro Consul Lucullus for Arcturus to go to North Africa with Legio Victrix. Again he stood by his friend but not openly, Arcturus explained that Lucullus believed that someone in the Republic was sowing discord so advised his old friend Caution. So Septimius played the role that the Pro Consul had made a formal request of Arcturus Aquila to be Legatus again and reform his legion to assist in challenging growing discord in North Africa. His arguments made the Senate Agree, trouble in North Africa would be troublesome since North Africa supplied a lot of grain to Rome.
Romans: Politica et Legionnaire
Within the streets of Rome it is fair to say that one must never work alone, for alone a person is meaningless, worthless and easily dealt with. But with allies then a person can rise to new heights and achieve their goals.
Arcturus must gain such allies in the Republic not only within the halls of the Senate where bureaucracy reigns supreme, but also within the arm of the legion. He must ensure that whomever is in command of his Legion when he is not present can be trusted.
Lucius Licinius Lucullus: Consul et familiaris - Consul and Family Friend
A long standing friend and ally of the Aquila Family, Lucius Lucullus was a close friend to both parents of Arcturus during the early years of their marriage and upon the birth of their children in modern terms was chosen as their "God father" should anything happen to them.
Lucius was a well respected and influential Patrician who had served many years in the Roman Senate as well as a number of Governorships across the Mediterranean and as a mediator of peace talks and diplomatic gatherings with other nations on all borders of Rome. thankfully he was not in Rome during the Reign of Sulla though he had served under him against Mithridates but left not long after the victory.
Undertaking a posting to Hispania only returning after Sulla had passed. During his time as a politician he like his friend Quintus began to see the failings of the Republic and how much of a downward spiral the senate was in. The pair began to plan for the restoration of the Republic through hard work, Lucius and Quintus earned a number of allies within the halls of the Senate all with the intention of convincing the senate to focus on matters of importance rather than squabble over what the pair deemed petty matters such as the choosing of who would have what office.
To greater aid in this endeavour, Quintus pushed for Lucius to run for the position of Consul a role that would grant him a level of influence and control that would allow them to start the process they had been working towards. Lucius agreed and ran for office alongside a friend Marcus Cotta, with a clear victory the pair took office, but before anything could begin.
Mithridates launched his attack on Asia Minor, recognising the more immediate danger, both Cotta and Lucius were granted power by the Senate to muster legions and repel the attack. Whilst Cotta went to fight Mithridates in Asia Minor, Lucius would join after a large force of pirates and Pontus soldiers had been defeated on the Island of Lesbos.
Sadly upon his arrival he was handed a message informing him that his oldest friend had died, Stricken by the news it was said that he was unable to do anything for hours beside just sit in silence within the solace of his tent. When he finally emerged, his informed one his centurions to return to Rome and safely escort a young officer that would be joining them.
That young man was Arcturus, who was named the head of Lucius' speculatores a force of soldiers that would perform less conventional acts against the enemy. The tide turned against the Pirates when suddenly he was informed of the disastrous ambush of Legio Victrix, with their Legate injured and unable to perform his duties. Lucius was informed of the actions of Arcturus during the Ambush where he managed to safely maintain command of the legion during the retreat, with this he named the young boy the new Legatus of Victrix and ordered him to lead the campaign against the Pirates and later the counter attack of Asia Minor.
Upon his return to Rome, Lucius stood alongside his co consul Cotta and other prominent Senators in the decision of recognising Arcturus as the rightful owner of the Aquila estate. After finishing his term as Consul of Rome, he went into partial retirement acting as an advisor and mediator for various meetings between squabbling Senators.
Eventually he was requested by the Senate and offered the posting as Pro Consul of the Province of North Africa, understanding the service of the Republic such a posting was, Lucius accepted seeing it as a pleasant means of spending his twilight years. However after only a few months, he learned of growing concerns across the border in Egypt and through his spies learned of the actions of the Vitellius brothers and feared that matters would only get worse.
He sent a request to the Senate and to Arcturus for the young man to join him in North Africa with Legio Victrix under his command. Sadly he would not live to see the arrival of the help he had requested.
Marcus Auerlius Cotta: Consul Romam- Consul of Rome
Fellow politician and Consul of Rome, Cotta was elected alongside his associate and partner Lucius Lucullus. Cotta like Lucullus had served under Sulla during the second Mithridatic war but remained in Asia Minor after the victory to maintain order. He returned to Rome after Sulla died and ran for political office.
Cotta however was more decisive in his ideas and his position when compared to his Co-Consul Lucius, he had the point of making his mind clear and ensuring that the problem was dealt with swiftly so that other what he thought more important matters could be attended to.
This was shown during the Asia Minor Campaigns against Mithridates, Lucius wanted to clear out the Pirates from Lesbos which had been harassing Roman shipping and supplies lines to the province which would hinder their efforts against Mithridates. Cotta however wanted to deal with Mithridates like the pair had done before under Sulla, take their legions and deal a decisive strike against the enemy in one battle.
Which seemed to show after a few skirmishes against Mithridates army in the early weeks, however things changed Mithridates showed his true strength of his army alongside that of the Greek cities in Asia Minor. Cotta was cornered in the city of Chalcedon and held under siege, needing reinforcements he sent messenger after messenger to Lucius calling on him to reinforce him and break the siege. Sadly the help came to late, Mithridates managed to best Cotta's legion and captured him making him a valuable hostage against Rome.
Eventually Cotta would be freed during the final battle of the war, Arcturus lead a small force of Speculatores into Pontica where Mithridates was going to make his last stand. Cotta and his surviving centurions and legionnaires were freed and swiftly joined the fight against the remaining forces, though grateful for the rescue. Cotta would hold some resentment against Arcturus for saving him, believing it would have been better had he died fighting than be taken prisoner needing rescue.
This disgruntled side of him would continue upon their return to Rome, where he actively avoided Arcturus during the celebration at Lucullus' villa. Instead having to listen to his brothers verbal barbs about being saved by a young man with his first command, Cotta left that celebration incredibly drunk. Though he would repay the young man by siding with Lucullus and Cicero in returning the Aquila Villa, properties and wealth to Arcturus.
After his term as Consul ended he retired from active politics and retreat to his family estate in the countryside where he remained for the following years.
Marcus Aurelius Cato: et moralis Quaestionario - The Moral Questioner
A longstanding member of the Roman Senate, Cato is often regarded by other members of the Senate to be a constant thorn in their side for his constant arguments on ground of morality. Cato is a strong believer of certain elements of reform when it comes to the Roman Republic, though he agrees with the rule of Law and the continuation of the Senate as the governing body for Rome and its Provinces.
He wishes to reform certain matters preferably on Moral grounds, one of his arguments is on the matter of sentencing. His thinking is that certain crimes are more forgivable than others or of the same type, such as the stealing of food. If the point was to profit from the theft then he agrees with the current laws, however if the food was stolen to feed people then he holds that the punishment should be lessened on Moral grounds.
Although he has some difficulty among the Patricians that dominate the Senate, he does have several allies, friends and associates among them, formerly Quintus Aquila who supported certain areas of his wishes for Reform. Alongside Quintus and later Lucullus Cato was able to make certain grounds on reforming the Republics system, this changed however after the death of Quintus who was his primary backer.
Though he continued to argue for legal reforms most met deaf ears as the senate was more concerned with the ongoing conflict in Asia Minor. When Arcturus returned to Rome after the Campaigns victory, Cato once more took the floor with a rousing speech ended by the Motion to recognise Arcturus as the rightful owner of the Aquila Estate and the recognition of the Legio Graecorum as a legal Roman Auxiliary legion.
Arcturus would repay this support with his own, providing mostly moral backing to Cato's moves in the Senate. Though it must be said, whilst Cato might be seen as a Moral Reformist for some, to others he is still a Patrician from a noble family and is a adamant defender of the Republic.
Marcus Tullius Cicero: advocatus et defensor patricii - Lawyer and Defender of Patricians
The most proficient and renowned Lawyer in the Roman Senate to date, Cicero is by far a Patrician through and through, a strong a fervent believer in the rule of law throughout the Republic. He sees the rule of law by the words in which they were written, rather than interpreting the words for something different, he see them as they are word for word.
This has allowed him the foresight to know the plays and ploys in any trial and case in the legal system of the Republic whereas also giving him foresight in the various legal proceedings of the Senate. Cicero is a very cautious individual when it comes to the matter of reform, though he will not challenge anything that he sees as beneficial for the Republic he would never back something that he believed would counter the law. This has often lead to him and Cato having constant verbal contests both in and out of the Senate, though he would not say they have a rivalry more of a contest of ideology.
Quintus Aquila respected Cicero deeply during his time in the Senate, calling Cicero a stubborn man but one that he would gladly call a friend, which was returned by Cicero to Quintus. Though this respect did not follow after Quintus' untimely death, though there were some who suspected that Quintus had been murdered by those seeking power. Cicero was against an investigation deeming it uncalled for, for as he made clear in the Senate there "Is no Evidence of Foul play in the death of our friend and colleague".
What he didn't realise was that Quintus had secreted him his will in a bundle of documents for his review. When word came that Quintus' son was returning from the Campaigns in Asia Minor, Cicero finally delved into the parchments and discovered a letter from Quintus before his death asking if he would be the Executor of his will accompanying the letter was the Will itself. During the proceedings on the Aquila estate, Cicero presented the letter and will to the Senate and asked Consuls, Lucullus and Catto to review their authenticity. Both agreed the handwriting was that off Quintus Aquila and deemed the authentic, Cicero motioned for the will to be recognised and the last wishes of Quintus Aquila be upheld, the Senate readily agreed in a unanimous vote.
But this act did not mean that he was partial to the Aquila family, before that particular senate meeting, Cicero had made clear his intentions to represent Tiberius Vitellius during the proceedings for the Senate whether or not should investigate the claims of Arcturus Aquila and Lucius Lucullus that Tiberius had been secretly supporting Mithridates in the war against Rome. Cicero made the point clear on the lack of evidence on the charges and his representation of the Vitellius brothers ended with the Senate deeming the matter closed due to a lack of Evidence.
Marcus Minucius Thermus: Legatus Legonis - Legatus of the Legion
Before Arcturus came onto the scene, Marcus Thermus was selected by the Senate to command the newly formed Legio Victrix which was at that point an untested legion of fresh recruits. The hope was that Thermus with his mixed military experience in Hispania would be able to "Whip them into shape", which at first was proven correct, alongside the officers under his command he was able to turn the legion into a proper fighting force.
But his failings came with his unwillingness to heed the advice of those around him, during the march to Mytilene, Arcturus recommended sending a scouting force through the ravine they were going to march through to catch the city unaware. But Thermus was against this regaling how they were fighting a force of bandits and pirates who knew nothing of military strategy.
As the legion marched through however, they were ambushed by the entire Pontic and Pirate force defending Mytilene, caught in a confined ravine the legion broke down from inexperience and Thermus was badly wounded by an arrow to his upper chest. He would have died had it not been for the actions of Arcturus and the Speculatores getting him away from the fighting during the retreat.
Thermus relinquished his command to Lucius Lucullus but did recommend Arcturus be placed in command of the Legion for the remainder of the Campaign. Thermus himself remained with Lucullus and his Legio Prima Italica where he spent much time ensuring his wound was properly cared for and kept clean.
After Mithridates was captured and the war came to an end, Thermus stayed in Asia Minor to become the temporary governor for the province until such a time that the Senate could decide on who would take the post. He was the chosen candidate and remained in Asia Minor for a few years until his term of office came to an end and returned to Rome.
Turius Marius Orestes: Secundo in imperio - Second in Command`
Chosen by Thermus to be the Secundo In Imperio or the second in command of Legio Victrix, Orestes had the explicit job of maintaining the Legion on a day to day occurrence ensuring that the Legate may focus his mind on the more important matters such as strategy and command.
Orestes was a good choice for the job as he had served in Hispania with the garrisons under Pompey and had great experience in maintaining order in those under his command. Though the Campaign in Asia Minor was his first true command in a time of battle and war, his experience had been in the upkeep of troops in a fortified garrison.
When he arrive at the temporary fort for Legio Victrix on Lesbos, he saw how fresh the Legion was, the camp whilst organised was clearly lacking. The fortifications were substandard being a simple wooden wall lacking any towers or protection, the sleeping quarters for the officers was below standards, the forge was empty and the infirmary tents were miniscule.
When Thermus was wounded, many expected Orestes to be chosen to take command but having seen Arcturus during the Ambush he had no qualms in having this young blood take command of the Legion, which was proven right during the Asia Minor Campaign where Arcturus' strategies and plans for battle impressed Orestes and the other officers.
Upon their return to Rome, Orestes like the rest of the Legion surrendered their arms and disbanded, though he would visit his former Legate on occasions. When he learned that Pro Consul Lucullus had requested the Legate and Legio Victrix to assist him in North Africa, Orestes formerly requested the Legate for his previous post as Secucdo for the Legion.
To which Arcturus replied "What took you so long?"
Publius Felix Macaenas: Mercator, Entrepreneur, particeps - Merchant, Entrepreneur, Partner
A quick witted, haggling, hard bargaining Merchant of Rome, Publius' father and Arcturus' were long time partners in the production and trading of fine wines from the Aquila Vineyard. Something that Publius has continued after his fathers retirement from the business, though Publius is a little more of a bargain hunter than his father who was always fair with his deals.
Publius prefers something more encouraging for him in the long run, whether than be buying or selling, he will always look for the most profitable deal. A way of thinking that gets him into trouble very easily, on one occasion he had to be "Rescued" after a customer beat him up. Though despite receiving many blows to the face and chest, he claimed "He was winning" much to the amusement who knew him.
When Arcturus returned from the Asia Minor Campaign against Mithridates and had regained the family holdings thanks to the Senate and his fathers will. He began to properly renew the trade of fine wines coming from the Vineyard, his first stop was none other than his old partner Publius who being the entrepreneur gave a more business style deal for the trade of wine.
But Arcturus instead countered offering a long term plan, where instead of a singular payment for the trade, Publius would instead pay a series of instalments over a course of five years with each instalment dependant on the profits. Publius liking the idea readily agreed and became the defacto trader of Aquila Wine.
Gaius Julius Caesar: callidum, Permoveri, Ambitious - Calculating, Motivated, Ambitious
A young, up and coming, ambitious young man, Gaius has had some misfortune in the past at a young age with his family siding against the Roman General and self proclaimed dictator Sulla. His family lost all during the civil war between Marius and Sulla after Marius and his supporters were defeated.
Gaius lost his father, father in law and many friends during the subsequent purges performed under Sulla's orders. Gaius followed Arcturus to Lesbos to serve in the Legion hoping to use the prestige of victory to regain much of his families influence and wealth. During the journey he and Arcturus had many a discussion on the Senate and Political Intrigue which Arcturus would remember.
He showed his skills for intrigue and strategy during the initial forays against the enemy forces across the Island. But he yearned for more, he saw such opportunities in Arcturus and the Speculatores under his command, as said he saw the military career as a means of achieving political influence for himself.
Sadly this did not come to pass, as during the march on Mytilene by Legio Victrix, the legion was ambushed by the Pontic and Pirates during their march through a deep ravine. Gaius was among the first killed during the initial volley of arrows. After the battle was over, Arcturus ensured that all bodies were returned to Rome for proper burial, he requested that Gaius being given a dignified ceremony fitting a young man lost in his prime.
Though the lessons he taught on Political Intrigue and how to use it would be remembered by Arcturus during his challenges.
Romans: Adversaries
Of course not everyone in Rome can be a friend or Ally, some would abuse the system of the Roman Republic to gain benefits only for themselves or to seek the ruin of those who challenge them now or in the future.
Tiberius Cassius Vitellius: Seniorem fratrem - The Older Brother
Technically the elder brother of the Vitellius family, he is by rights the real controller of the Families wealth, property etc. Which is often shown in his actions, being pushy and demanding to some but then shift in personality being the calm, respectful, caring person.
As the oldest brother Tiberius is by legal terms the Pater Familia (Basically the head of the family) and has full control over the his families wealth and undertakings in regards of their Villa. This can include the arrangement of a marriage for his brother Lurco, but despite taking a wife himself there has been no clear intention of finding one for his little Brother. While some especially the Aquila family were worried when he married Lusitania after her fathers death, all information coming from her makes it clear that Tiberius is a very caring and loving husband often lavishing her with gifts. Though the suspicion in the Aquila family remains clear that either he or his brother were behind the death of Quintus.
Following the victory in the Asia Minor Campaign, accusations were made against Tiberius that he had been seen within Mithridates encampment and was suspected in the providing of supplies to the King of Pontus. But the claims were without evidence and as the case against him was closed. Though his travels during the time of the Campaigns were suspicious for some Senators, since then Tiberius has not left Rome.
Later since the charges were cleared, he was later able to become a member of the Senate alongside his Brother Lurco. Though he mostly appears to vote the same way his brother does, as his mind is more for business than politics, thus increasing the opinions of many that although Tiberius is technically the head of the family, the real power is found within Lurco the younger brother.
Though Tiberius enjoys the high life his families wealth has granted him which is shown in the fashionable clothing he wears as well as the lavish gifts he bestows his wife Lusitania. He does on some rare occasions show a more humble side to his character, for example during the campaigns in Gaul he intruded on Legate Aquila demanding to be shown something that he thought had been hidden from him. Arcturus presented a collection of Acorns and seeds he had collected from their travels from different Oaks to Pine to Beach.
He explained that on his return to Rome he hoped to plant them in the Villa' garden as he had done with other plants he had collected during his travels. From Asia Minor, to Egypt and now Gaul he intended to plant them all in his garden and watch them grow during his twilight years. Tiberius chuckled at the idea, despite the wealth and riches from loot and slaves available from the Campaign, the legendary leader of Legio Victrix was going to return with a handful of acorns of no worth. To which Arcturus asked what the man defines as worth, to which he offered some to Tiberius for his garden, which the man still showing his humble side accepted them as a gift with the promise he and Lusitania will plant them on his return.
Lurco Scaevello Vitellius: ad speculandum - The One to Watch
Technically the younger of the two brothers, Lurco is believed by some to be the Vitellius you need to watch since whilst his words and expression show a person that has great respect and compassion. If one was to look into his eyes, there is the clear distinct signs of a untrustworthy soul.
Lurco is known among the families associates as mind full of intrigue and analytics with the sole focus on the positions of authority and power. Whilst his brother was interested in the business side of the family, Lurco had a loftier goal of working the Senate, with some intrigue and suspicions of questionable methods he was elected to the Senate.
Whilst many Senators can be found within one side or another, either being Patricians or reformists, Lurco works both sides never showing which group he has a strong favouring of. Some like Lucullus and Quintus believed that he was merely using division of the Senate to sow dissent thus allowing him to obtain more and more influence.
After the actions of the Mithridates and the successful repelling of his attack by Consuls, Lucullus and Cotta he made small moves to see his brother elected to the Senate alongside him. Though those who observe always note that Tiberius merely votes the same way his brother does without any question.
After a year it was Lurco that made the recommendation that former Consul Lucullus be given the position of Pro Consul of North Africa as a means of rewarding him for his many years of service to the Republic. Many in the Senate agreed as at the time the North Africa Province was a quiet region and showed no signs of trouble in the future.
A notice was made however that in the years following Lurca made frequent diplomatic trips to Egypt on behalf of the Senate as well as personal trips for his family trading business.
Corvinus: Praetorian, sicarius, despectus - Praetorian, Assassin, Despicable
The Personal bodyguard to both Vitellius Brothers for many years, Corvinus serves as the primary form of protection for the Vitellius family with his small force of guards under the Vitellius family employ. By law of the Republic no Roman can be within Italy under arms, meaning a person who is without
Senatorial authority can be within Italy with weapons and armed men backing them.
But that does not mean that the rich and powerful cannot have bodyguards with blunt weapons such as batons and wooden stakes protecting them, their homes and businesses in their employ. Most hire men such as former Legionnaires or gladiators to act as their guards but the Vitellius brothers have Corvinus hire street thugs and former criminals to be their "Guards".
Though there was some questioning during Lurco's election to the Senate that these same "Guards" had been used to force people to vote for him. Though such claims were never proven as some of those same guards were later arrested by Corvinus and others then handed over to the proper authorities. But then at the same time there was the suspicion by those who were against Lurco that Corvinus may have had a hand in the mysterious deaths of individuals that questioned the Vitellius brothers or actively resisted their efforts.
But again there was never anything proven.
Companions:
A man is not an Island, through his travels Arcturus shall make friends that he shall rely on more than any other. They will become a second family to him, companions he would gladly make sacrifices for if it meant a better life for them, sacrifices that they shall recognise and be willing to repay for a man who they begin to care for in return.
Syneros: Tutor, socius et amicus -Tutor, Ally and Friend
Born in Greece many years ago, Syneros did not begin his life with the intention of becoming a teacher to the rich and powerful. In fact growing up the pursuit of the mind was far beyond what he focused on, instead he put all effort in the sport of Pankration a form of wrestling.
He was so successful in this sport that he was put forward as a contestant for the Greek Olympics, however some discrepancy comes from the outcome. Some claim that Syneros won fair and square against his opponent however some make clear the accusation of cheating that Syneros only won by violation of the rules. These accusations forced Syneros to leave Greece altogether, where he found sanctuary in Rome where his studies of the mind began to take fruit.
Eventually he was hired on by the Aquila family to be a tutored for their children, this task came with some benefits. Not only would Syneros receive a steady income which was fair for his work, but would also be granted the right by the family to use their library for his personal use and even being allowed to live in the Villa in the servants quarters or if he did not wish so then the family was willing to pay for his lodgings in the city.
Syneros accepted the privileges but liked the idea of living in the Villa even if it was in the Servants quarters which even then were still a step above the small room he had been renting for many years. Under his tutelage the Aquila children were properly taught everything from logic to mathematics, from Philosophy to language nothing was missed at the request of the parents.
Over time Syneros began to see the children and the family as more than just his employers he began to look upon them as a family of his own. Something he made known to Quintus Aquila his Employer who was more than happy to see the aging tutor grow as a person.
Syneros was hurt when Quintus passed, he supported the family as best he could but knew that they needed to grieve. Sadly they never had the chance, when Luvenia came to him she asked him to look after Arcturus during his travels and keep him safe. Despite not wanting to leave Luvenia and Lusitania alone, he agreed understanding that the only way to make sure the family would be safe would be if Arcturus was alive and able to reclaim what was rightfully his.
With some help, Syneros escorted Arcturus out of Rome to the port of Ostia and from there onto a ship bound for Lesbos where he would serve under Consul Lucullus. At first Syneros asked for everyone onboard to let the young one have some time alone to allow the boy grieve for his father and come to terms with all that was happening.
After Arcturus was made Legatus of Legio Victrix, Syneros was asked by Arcturus to provide help in the caring of the injured and sick, since the old man knew much on the process of healing from his Olympic days as well as his many readings on medicine and health. Though this meant he would be unable to follow Arcturus on his travels, Syneros agreed knowing that the young one he cared much for was growing up into a man and needed to make his own choices in life.
After their return to Rome, Syneros remained a member of the Aquila Household, instead of teaching and tutoring the family. He now served as the leading assistant in the upkeep of the house and the family books and ledgers of their Vineyard, though in his spare time he would visit Bestia Tabat and continue the tutoring on logic and theoretical thinking.
Caeso Quinctius Aquilinus: Centurio, Protectoris et Amici - Centurion, Protector and Friend
A life time soldier of the Roman Legions, Caeso shares little of his early life notably his childhood, he always exclaimed that his life began when he joined the Legions and fought for the Republic. From the low rank of a simple Legionnaire, he was strong and determined individual who over a number of years rose through the ranks until he was made a Centurion at a rather young age.
The person who gave him this placement was Lucius Lucullus who saw something in the young man and believed him to be officer material despite the opposition of the other Centurions and Prefects. Caeso proved them all wrong though following his first battle in Hispania against a rebel tribe where he proved himself not only as a strong warrior but a fierce and respected leader of men.
Whilst other Centuries were on the brink, his held firm and held the line against the attacking rebels. Again this showed his determination to fight for Rome, Lucullus noted him and kept in close contact with the young man over the years. When Mithridates launched another attack on Asia Minor, Lucullus now Consul asked for Caeso to be one of his Centurions for Legio Prima Italica wanting the mans experience in battle and leadership to help in training fresh recruits.
But when news came from Rome, Caeso was given a new task, under secret orders from Lucullus alone, he raced back to Rome and retrieved a still grieving Arcturus and escorted him to Ostia and then to Lesbos where he learned that he was now to be transferred under Arcturus' command with the Speculatores. Although uncertain of such as he was a frontline soldier, he quickly changed his mind following a few engagements with the enemy in which Arcturus made use of all the skill of those in the party.
After the ambush of Legio Victrix and Arcturus being made Legate of the Legion, Caeso remained on with the Speculatores despite an offer for him to be made a leading officer of the Legion. But Caeso had made clear his job was to protect Arcturus and if he was going to travel with the Speculatores then he will stay with them. As well as this he had seen how good of an officer Arcturus was after the successful command of the Legion following Legate Thermus being wounded.
Upon their victory and their return to Rome, Caeso stayed in touch with Arcturus and a year or so later invited his former charge to a night of celebration for living in peace for a whole year, gladly accepting the two met back up into one of Caeso's favourite inns where everything was served from simple ale to good wine. When a slave came up however and informed Caeso that he was the father of her child, Caeso was taken back as he had no memory of her though that was common for him.
Things came to a head later when after learning of trouble in North Africa, Caeso had been experiencing trouble with the owner of the slave woman who was the mother of his child. Not wanting to leave a friend in need Arcturus offered his full support including the assistance in working the matter through the confines of the Law. Something that Caeso was grateful for.
Bestia Tabat: Gladiator, bellator et comes - Gladiator, Warrior and Companion
From Mauritania in North Africa (Modern Day Algeria) Bestia Tabat was sold a young age alongside his sister into slavery by his own people. Whilst his sister was sold into servitude, Bestia was sold to a Gladiator School or Ludus where he was trained from arrival in combat and indoctrinated for pursuit of Glory in the Arena.
Despite being young Bestia proved his worth with effective and fierce fighting in the Arena for the enjoyment of the crowds. Eventually after a number of years where he became close to becoming the Champion of the city he was within Bestia Tabat was given his freedom for what he deemed dishonourable reasons, since Bestia was so good. It was proving difficult for his master to find any one willing to put forth gladiators to fight him as well as that no one was willing to make bets against him.
In essence he was no longer of any real profit for his Master, once freed Bestia did not know what to do, he had spent his life in the arena. He became a wandering hired muscle for anyone willing to pay him, eventually he was hired to work for Consul Lucullus in the Speculatores during the Asia Minor campaign. The Consul thinking the former gladiators skills in combat would prove worthwhile and he was right when during the transit from Rome to Lesbos the ship carrying him was attacked by Pirates.
With his aid the other passengers notably Arcturus, Syneros and Caeso were able to defeat the pirates and continue their journey.
During the campaign Bestia became intrigued with the teachings of Syneros who was more than willing to teach all that he knew to the former gladiator. These lessons continued after their return to Rome where Arcturus knowing full well that Bestia would find difficult without anyone to fight, so hired the man for as a bodyguard for the vineyard and Aquila owned buildings across Rome. Which Bestia was grateful for.
Upon learning that Lucullus was in trouble again Bestia offered his services as a warrior not only because he wanted to see battle again. But also because he knew that in North Africa he could begin the process of finding his sister again.
Julia Calida: Fugitivus, speculator et oculus vigilans -Runaway, Spy and Watchful eye
Born to a prestigious and wealthy family in Rome, Calida never really had any intention of following the traditional sense of being a Roman woman waiting for her family to barter her off to some rich man for their gain. When she could she would make forays out of the family home into Rome where she would have fun, dressing up as a boy to conceal herself, she became a fan of archery and trained in secret. All Calida ever wanted was freedom and the right to choose her own life rather than have it chosen for her, this of course made her unlady like in the eyes of her family and those who would have offered a marriage.
Eventually she was married off to a wealthy noblemen who treated rather harshly often victimizing her, her favourite bow was broken and thrown into a burning fire, she would often receive beatings from him. Eventually she had enough and tried to escape, unfortunately he caught her in the act but suffered a fall during the struggle, with her entire family believing she had killed her Husband Calida fled and was only stopped by Lucius Lucullus who decided to protect the young woman.
Taking alongside him during his travel to Lesbos he made Calida continue the Deception of being a young man named Juilius Calida who was a spy, assassin and saboteur under his command, the first of his Speculatores. During the Campaign in Asia Minor she would serve under Arcturus against Mithridates and later having no option open to her revealed her secret to Arcturus knowing full well that the secret would be uncovered soon enough anyway. To her surprise Arcturus didn't care she had more than proved herself worthy of his trust and that was all that mattered.
Upon their return to Rome, Calida had a run in with her brother who wanted to arrest her, but she managed to convince him to leave her be for the time being. After that day however she vanished until rumours began to spread of trouble in North Africa and she made herself known again to her companions. Owing Lucullus she wanted to go with them on their "Expedition" to North Africa to help the Pro Consul.
Deianeia: Gladiator, superstes et curiosus - Gladiator, Survivor and Curious
Coming from the Scythian peoples from the Northern Black Sea, Deianeia was captured by a band of slavers during a raid on her people, he sister was killed in the attack and she was taken into slavery.
She was sold off rather quickly to a Gladiator Ludu in Thracia to a fierce and despicable master who treated his Gladiators like a private army. Through sheer determination and ferocity she proved herself able to not only defend herself but earn the respect of the other Gladiators around her.
When their master the defacto head of state for Thracia under Rome chose to side with Mithridates, Lucullus sent Arcturus to investigate and try and regain control over the region. Whilst there he was appalled at the treatment of the Gladiators and slaves present in the Ludus. He secretly asked Bestia to sneak around and look into matters, what followed was an attack by Rebel Gladiators lead by one called Spartacus. He lead the assault and defeated the guards, Arcturus and the Speculatores helped and captured their master, despite the demands of the rebels Arcturus refused but did offer a change of heart.
He made clear that even if they could continue the rebellion eventually Rome would put it down with fierce brutality. So he offered the argument of Freedom to anyone willing to fight in a Legion he was forming, though concerned Deianeia accepted and convinced the others to do the same, Deianeia was taken in by the Speculatores whilst the Ludus became the gathering point for any Gladiator wishing to fight for freedom under Roman Law through service.
When the campaign was over, Deianeia and the other members of Legio Graecorum waited for the promise to be kept. Despite the misgivings of some, Arcturus stood up for his promise and eventually with some help managed to convince the Senate to recognise Legio Graecorum and granted freedom to all who served as soldiers in the Legion.
Deianeia herself went with the other Speculatores to Rome wanting to see what many called the greatest city in the known world. She was not disappointed she marveled at every construct in Rome, from the various buildings constructed from the finest stone, properly paved streets and clean water being carried in by giant Aqueducts. Knowing she would struggle Arcturus and Syneros offered her a place to stay in the Aquila Villa knowing she would enjoy the pleasant life but also her strength might help should trouble come.
She was only too willing. When word came of North Africa however her curiosity for Rome turned to Egypt a place where it was said that mighty wonders of construction could be found. She volunteered her services again but everyone knew she just wanted to travel and see more of the world, whilst a her true motive was to find those who had initially enslaved her and had murdered a beloved member of her family many years before.
Titus Pullo: legionarius, centurio, Praefectus- Legionary, Centurion, Commander
One of the countless officers serving in Legio Victrix and much like many of the other Centurions, Legio Victrix is his first real command. Coming from Ostia, Titus was an unruly child and was put into the Legions by his family to calm him.
Pullo' first postings were always in places of peace performing manual labour in the mainitence of garrisons and forts across the Provinces. Eventually during a bout with some bandits, he showed his knack for horsemanship, recognised for this he was given over to the cavalry where he spent days performing patrols.
When the war in the east arose, Pullo and his cavalry were given over to Legio Victrix to greater increase their fighting ability. Again Pullo found himself bored as all he now a centurion and his cavalry did was perform scouting forays and the odd skirmish with enemy scouts. This would change after the Ambush of the Legion and the assignment of Arcturus as the Legate for Victrix, now Pullo found himself busy with his commander gone presumed dead Arcturus gave Pullo command of the Cavalry.
During the legions second attempt on Mytilene he was ordered to take command of the Cavalry and lead a series of probing attacks the southern lines of Mytilenes defences to divert attention. Later against Mithridates his cavalry came of great help in many battles using lighter armour they managed to constantly outmanoeuvre the Pontic heavy cavalry and tire them out.
After the campaign he returned with his friend Vorenus to Rome and began working as an enforcer of the law. Until a few years later when word came that Legio Victrix was being recalled to service in North Africa, Pullo instantly joined back up and received his previous command of the Cavalry.
Lucius Vorenus: Centurio et Praefectus - Centurion and Commander
A Roman through and through, Vorenus was born to believe in the ideals of the Republic and the Senate, a fierce proponent for the upholding of the traditions that make Rome what it is and he is more than willing to fight for them.
He was among the first to join Legio Victrix when the call is made for a mustering, Vornus was just as fierce in his handling of troops under his command as he was at home with his inn. Due to his ability he was made Centurion of his detachment and took on the duty with fervour, yet this was put to the test when the ambush came, during the fighting Vorenus lost himself and very nearly panicked as he did not know what to do without orders.
Then came Arcturus who slapped the man in the face and ordered him to help Caeso in forming a blocking force at the entrance of the Ravine to ensure that Victrix had a means of retreat. Vorenus did so and grabbed legionnaires left right and centre and dragging them into the ordered formation where he fought in the front row alongside them. Now his mind focused and allowed him to maintain himself and keep order in the ranks.
Days later after Arcturus had been made Legate, he asked that Vorenus be made a leading officer for his ability in combat. Though Vorenus questioned stating he had lost himself in the moment Arcturus reminded him that he regained it when it was most needed and would need it again during the second assault on Mytilene.
Throughout the rest of the Campaign Vorenus maintained himself and proved to be worthy of the trust that the Legate had placed in him. Proving time and time again in battle after battle to maintain order in the Ranks and watch out for the men.
Upon their return to Rome Vorenus' outlook had changed, he had seen battle and war, he believed that discipline was what made Rome great. But seeing how Arcturus showed mercy more often than required it proved how much of a leader Arcturus was, when Vorenus asked why the reply was "Discipline is all well good... but oppression is a mask for fear.... leaders are more likely to oppress and discipline people when they are afraid".
Vorenus took this to heart and practiced it, back in his inn he decided to be forthcoming with the slaves he had, in the past if one broke something he would punish them. But now he would simply tell them to clean it up and arrange for a replacement even when people were watching.
Over the course of the next few years he would sometimes see his former Legate as well as Pullo who was a frequent visitor to his inn much to some amusement of Vorenus and his family. But when the word came that Legio Victrix was being reformed, Vorenus heeded the call and was granted his posting again as a leading officer in the Legion.
Adversaries: Asia Minor:
Pontus is a Mountainous Land tucked away on the Black Sea Coast. Its modest appearance and apparently out of the way position should not deceive. It is a strong, Hellenistic state, ably ruled and with a strong army and navy. From this mountain home, Pontus is able to build a strong and powerful army that could contest all of its neighbours be they lesser or greater.
Though the Question stands does Pontus reach for that which they can never truly grasp, as it reaches to try and wrestle the Province of Asia Minor away from Roman grip.
Arcturus must put his limited experience in leadership against battle-hardened, veteran commanders and generals as well as the Warrior King of Pontus. All the while trying to rebuild his broken legion and maintain its morale and discipline.
Mithridates: Ponticus rex ultor - Vengeful King of Pontus
An alleged descendant of one of the many Generals of Alexander the Great, Mithridates rules as King of one of the many successor Kingdoms that sprung up following the death of Alexander the Great. Mithridates himself however rules a kingdom in decline, in ages past his Kingdom dominated what is now Northern Turkey up the Caucasus and the Crimea. Much of the Black Sea was directly controlled by Pontus or a client city of theirs, now however wars with Rome has seen the Kingdom become squeezed eastward.
Merely a few years before Mithridates had attempted to regain some lands taken by Rome a generation before, however when he met the Roman legions under Sulla with the aid of Lucullus and Cotta, he was soundly defeated and retreated. Feeling disgraced by this defeat, he swore Revenge which would become bordering an obsession. But Mithridates bided his time and rebuilt his army, whilst also planting the seeds of rebellion among the people of Asia Minor, a number of wealthy and prominent citizens were willing to back him in a new attempt to claim the province.
But he waited, it wasn't until the election of Lucullus and Cotta that Mithridates made his move, having an assassin kill the Roman Pro Consul of the Province he launched a sudden and decisive invasion which met little resistance. A number of Cities backed him supplying him with weapons, supplies and additional soldiers, among them were the prominent cities of Mysia and Troas that gave him a great number of troops.
With these additional troops Mithridates was able to best Cotta when he arrived allowing him to capture his enemy and hold him hostage. But what Mithridates did not expect was a young man leading a fresh legion turning some of his so called Adversaries into Allies, eventually Mithridates was lacking the numbers he had and was forced to retreat.
He would make his last stand in the city of Pontica where he believed that with the backing of his secret supporter who had been giving him supplies. He would either be able to resist the Roman Siege or be able to escape the Romans and return home to muster a new army. Sadly this would not come to be as the supplies given to him were discovered by a Legatus named Arcturus and given to the legions who in turn lead the assault against him.
Mithridates tried to resist but after a one on one duel between him and Arcturus, Mithridates was soundly defeated and captured. Though the option was open as to what to do, Mithridates offered to go into exile, some wanted him executed, but Arcturus denied them all. The King of Pontus would be taken to Rome where he would be remained lock in a cell for the rest of his days.
Theopalis: proditor Romae - traitor to Rome
An influential political leader of the Region of Mysia in Asia Minor, Theopalis has maintained a long standing hatred of Roman presence in the region. Though some would assume this to be because of some national or cultural pride, the reason comes from the point of power and wealth.
A key figure in Mysia before Rome seized the province, his family was among the most influential, wealthiest, powerful of all citizens in Mysia. But after the Romans arrived, the influence and power began to decay as power was now held within the Roman Consul for the Province or the local Governors. Roman trade made the families wealth lessen and lessen as time passed, until the once proud family he came from was a fraction of its former self.
When Mithridates came with an offer of help in driving the Romans out of the province for good, Theopalis saw his chance to obtain that which had been taken from him, power. He readily agreed giving details of the Roman Consuls protection and villa, which allowed Mithridates assassins to strike. When he invaded Theopalis seized Mysia and pledged his and the cities considerable support to Mithridates their liberator.
But as with all things, such greed did not go unchallenged, the former wife of the Consul refused to accept him as the rightful governor of Mysia and worked with the Romans to remove him from power. Theopalis' treason was uncovered by Arcturus and the Speculatores, in letters hidden in his "Office", detailing that Theopalis had betrayed Rome long before the Pontus invaded.
Luring him out of the city limits was relatively easy as with some help from Syneros, Arcturus was able to convince Theopalis to meet under the idea that he was meeting Mithridates. Once at the meeting site he was arrested and put chains until he could be returned to Rome to face charges of treason and rebellion.
Theopalis was held in the encampment of Legio Victrix until their disbandment at the Rubicon and was handed over to Senatorial authorities into Rome and placed in a cell until his trial. He was tried and found guilty before the Senate of Treason, but before the announcement of the sentence of death, Arcturus requested that he be placed as a Life term imprisonment.
His arguments were validated by the Senate and Theopalis was sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of release. When asked why Arcturus argued such, he explained that if he had been put to death, The point he had made in Asia Minor of Rome being the Oppressor would have been proven right but by keeping him alive it shows the mercy of the Republic and that Rome does not seek vengeance like Theopalis and Mithridates did.
Atrixus: Dominus, servus et proditor - Master, Slaver and traitor
Legally Atrixus is only a Lanista, a proud owner and operator of a Ludus (Gladiator School) like his father before and his father before him. But by some manipulation of the Roman legal system, Atrixus became the defacto governor for the region of Thracia, mostly due to his constant use of his Gladiators as an informal militia to "Maintain the Peace".
But there is one thing that Atrixus desires more than the wealth his Ludus brings him on a near constant basis. His true sole wish is absolute control and power over all that he owns and expand into that which he doesn't, as the owner of the top Ludus in the region and much of Asia Minor, wealth grants him an easy path to corrupting those around him. Mostly in the form of other political leaders and influential land holders, sadly though things changed when a Roman Lanista that had spread from Capua Italy failed to maintain control.
Atrixus was asked by Rome to assist in the quelling of a slave rebellion in Thracia, as such he was allowed to use his newly found "Emergency powers" to conscript soldiers to "Fight the rebels". It was here that Mithridates came to him with an offer, in exchange for his loyalties in the fight against Rome, Mithridates would make the official ruler of Thracia as a client state of Pontus. Atrixus being the greedy and power hungry man he was readily accepted and began sending supplies, resources and even trusted gladiators to help Mithridates in Asia Minor.
Sadly his hopes for such easy power were dashed when Legio Victrix invaded Thracia to regain control of the region for Rome. Arcturus and the Legion were able to easily defeat the army defending the region and forced Atrixus to withdraw to his ludus. There he invited Arcturus under a truce for negotiations, he planned a thorough feast for the Legatus and his officers but intended to kill them during the banquet.
Again these plans were foiled when not only did his own Gladiators revolt against his cruel treatment but his Ludus was attacked by a force of Rebel gladiators. During the chaos Arcturus and his party overpowered Atrixus and his guards forcing the rest to surrender.
Atrixus was escorted to the encampment of Legio Victrix where he was held with the other prisoners. Arcturus made a point to ensure that he was not treated with privilege as most captured officials would have been. Upon the return to Rome, Atrixus was taken to prison and held for trial before the Senate, again Arcturus spoke up in favour of a more moral and fair punishment for the traitor. Atrixus was sentenced by the Senate to serve the remainder of his life as a slave, sweeping and cleaning the halls of the Senate.
Allies: Asia Minor
There is resistance however, not everyone in Asia Minor seeks the ruin of Rome and its expulsion from the region. Some despite everything Rome has done over the generations has seen the good that the Republic has brought to the region and they want to work so that the good shall return again.
For some it means regaining political power and the punishment of Traitors, for others it means something far greater, the promise of return of that which is called Free Will. Arcturus must maintain a proper watch on his allies for some seem to be more willing to cross lines that counter what they claim to fight for.
Zenobia: Vidua, Fidus? - Widow, Loyal?
Coming from wealth and prestige, Zenobia was similar in respect to many other Roman women of the upper classes of society, although Roman she and her family resided in their family holdings in Asia Minor where they had a number of trading connections. She was married to a influential and politically astute Senator when the pair were relatively young, which saw her rise in station.
But things remained the same until her husband was posted as the Pro Consul of Asia Minor and acted as the regions overall governing authority under the oversight of Rome. Sadly though for the People of Mysia and Troas were subjugated harshly by her Husband who used the province to fill his coffers and fund his extravagant lifestyle and Rome did little to stop it, for as long as Asia Minor paid its taxes and tithes the Senate had little care for the province.
This fuelled the hatred against Rome among the people of the Province especially with those who had once held power in the previous Pro Consul and were now being side lined in favour of Sycophants who "Willingly put their tongues to Ass". Eventually Mithridates made his move and offered these individuals a chance for so called freedom from Rome, Zenobia's husband was assassinated and much of Asia Minor fell to Mithridates and his armies.
When Cotta landed with his legion, Zenobia tried to approach him to gain some help in deposing Theopalis from the leadership of Mysia. Sadly all attempts were ignored, until Legio Victrix arrived, Zenobia became an outcast among Mysia, upon the arrival of Arcturus to the city Zenobia made her move and made the same request to him. Arcturus agreed to help knowing that removing Theopalis from power would remove Mysia and Troas from Mithridates' side.
After the victory of the campaign and the arrest of Theopalis and Mithridates, Zenobia would go on to become a highly respected and influential leader for Asia Minor. Alongside the temporary Governor, Thermus, she was able to turn Mysia into a bustling city of trade with deep connections with its neighbours across Asia Minor.
Spartacus: Servus, rebellis, auxiliaris - Slave, Rebel, Auxiliary
Born to one of countless Thracian Villages, the man who would become Spartacus was originally believed to have been a simple man of his Village but took up arms against Barbarian tribes from the North. The Thracians resisted the attacks but were later subjugated by Rome and Spartacus became a slave, purchased by a Ludus for training he became a respected Gladiator in Thracia and eventual Champion.
At some point however he orchestrated a rebellion within his Ludus and lead the Gladiators and Slaves within in a successful Revolt, leading to massacre of countless Roman guards. He then lead the Rebels on a campaign of raiding and scorched earth attacking villa's and other isolated locations across the region freeing more and more slaves.
At the same time Mithridates launched his attack and lead the Pontus into Asia Minor and Thracia supported him. During an attack on the Villa/Ludus owned by Atrixus. Spartacus came into contact with Arcturus who gave the rebels an offer one that Spartacus was unsure of, he had already heard promises from Romans and no longer believed them. But when Bestia Tabat spoke up for the Legate, Arcturus made a statement though he couldn't promise them freedom he did make the promise that if they worked with him against Mithridates as an Auxiliary Legion. Then he would do all he can to aid them in their desire for freedom, even if he could not gain their freedom under Roman Law via the Senate then he would work to buy them all as slaves and then grant them freedom. Spartacus impressed by the young mans zeal and determination agreed and pledged himself to the Auxiliary legion that would named Legio Graecorum.
Within the new legion, Spartacus and his rebels were turned from Gladiators into a proper military force, given Roman gear and equipment as well as training. They had become a true Roman Legion and even resembled them at first glance. As a show of trust Arcturus had pushed for Spartacus to be made an officer of the Legion and after much disgust and borderline mutiny he was made legatus legionis Graecorum (The Legate of the Legion of Greeks). But these voices came to an end after Spartacus proved his merit as the Legions commander during a Pontic counter attack into Thracia.
The Same legion that was the first to breach the gates of Pontica during the final battle of the Campaign. After the victory and the end of hostilities, Spartacus remained with the Legion in Asia Minor and aided Temporary Governor Thermus in the maintaining of peace in the Province.
Adversaries turned Allies: Asia Minor
Sometimes allies become adversaries, but at the same time the reverse is also possible. As the war drags on in the region, people begin to grow tired or come to a truth that had been hidden from them.
Arcturus must convince those who are disillusioned at the continued warfare and death, all the while remembering that he has a purpose, to restore Roman Control and make it clear that Rome is the powerhouse now.
Leonidas: Lacaena, mercenarius, deceptus - Spartan, Mercenary, Disillusioned
Born in Greece years before, Leonidas takes his name from the legendary King of Sparta from centuries before, an honour he wishes to uphold to the best of his ability. Since being a direct descendant of Sparta he seeks to not only honour his name but the lineage he comes from, to aid in this he drilled his body and mind in the same way his ancestors did. During his early years of life he was raised and taught to obsessively despise the Romans for the subjugation of Greece. And was pushed by his family to renew the Spartan way of life.
He deliberately starved himself at times to try and push himself further, practiced day and night with the use of the Sword, spear and shield. When he deemed himself ready he became a wandering mercenary taking money when he could for work that he felt suited his skills.
Eventually this lead out of Greece where work as a mercenary was lacking and into Asia Minor, his first taste of the land came from Thracia where he would to quell "dissident" elements in society on behalf of Atrixus. But eventually he was hired by Mithridates alongside countless other mercenaries to bolster the ranks of his army during the battles against Rome.
Seeing Rome as his enemy Leonidas fought ferociously in countless engagements with the Roman legions under Cotta, he saw fighting Rome here as the stepping stone to freeing his ancestral Sparta from the Republic. But as time passed he learned that Mithridates had been backing Pirates in the Aegean Sea against Rome, though he was pleased with the fight against Rome. He questioned the willingness to fight with criminals though others didn't care he was unsure seeing them as deceitful and without honour.
More news came later when he came upon the Legatus of Legio Victrix, seeing a chance for glory he attempted to kill the Legatus but was captured. He pleaded for death, saying that death was preferable to captivity for a Spartan. But Arcturus refused saying that an Honourable warrior should face his death with pride not on his knees. The two began to talk with Arcturus doing most of the talking, Leonidas refusing to even recognise the boy before him, but his attention was caught when Arcturus explained that a Roman had been giving Mithridates supplies and a Roman Noble had been seen in his Camp.
Leonidas was caught off guard he believed in the speeches of Mithridates of liberating the land from the Romans, when all along he had been helped by them. After an entire night of talking and arguing, Leonidas finally relinquished himself from the loyalty he had given to the Enemy. Arcturus made an offer a steady, even and fair contract as a mercenary not to Rome but him personally, if Leonidas helped to bring Mithridates to justice then Arcturus would pay him for each battle he aided in and if he so wished could join the new Legio Graecorum.
Leonidas agreed and began to work with the Legate, eventually becoming a key fighter in the training of soldiers in both Victrix and Graecorum. When the campaign was won, he was offered work back in Rome by Arcturus, but he refused saying he planned on sticking around Asia Minor for a time working with Legio Graecorum in keeping the peace.
Archaeus: Praedonum, Generale, deceptus - Pirate, General, Disillusioned
At the beginning of the war between Pontus and the Roman Republic, Archaeus was a loyal General to his King Mithridates. A renowned admiral, experienced tactician and skilled warrior with years of practice in fighting other smaller nations to the North and east of the Black sea.
When Mithridates launched his attack on Asia Minor, Archaeus expected to follow his king in the assault with the main army. But instead he was sent to the Island of Lesbos to take command of the pirates using the Island as their base, he was expected to take command of the Pirates with a small force of soldiers and turn them into a proper fighting force.
Despite some difficulties he was able to achieve this goal and made a proper navy out of the Pirates, with whom he began ordering the strategic raiding of Roman Supply ships coming from Italy and Greece. His orders were by Mithridates, deny the Romans what they wish and what they need. So Archaeus did so, launching raid after raid against Roman ships and isolated villages along the coast to divide Roman garrisons.
Sadly his streaks of victory came it a sudden head when Consul Lucullus landed on Lesbos to put an end to the Pirates once and for all. He managed to defeat the first attempt by the Romans lead by Thermus and Legio Victrix to attack Mytilene via ambushing the Legion as they marched where he personally wounded Thermus in a dual. But he was soon after defeated and captured by the new Legatus of the legion Arcturus who took him prisoner.
During his captivity Arcturus visited him often to try and learn from his opponent, Archaeus refused most of the time to even talk to him. But one day many weeks later, Arcturus returned from a mission with the Speculatores, he went and spoke to Archaeus once again. This time Archaeus listened with intent as the boy before him asked where his loyalties lie, in the Kingdom or his King, Archaeus replied the King was the Kingdom.
Arcturus asked him "Then is it the purpose of the King to serve his Kingdom as it is a Kingdoms duty to serve the King?" Archaeus reluctantly agreed with the idea to which Arcturus then detailed that he had learned that Mithridates was bankrupting his Kingdom with this war. Archaeus refused to believe it calling it slander and lies, but the thought remained with him when he was released in a prisoner exchange. He snook into Mithridates quarters in the City of Pontica and discovered that Arcturus had told him the truth, within the room were letters from the Kingdom about the ongoing danger of Bankruptcy should the war continue that the Kingdoms Coffers were empty.
That Prices for common goods were rising and rising due to the increased taxes and tithes Mithridates had put in place to put more money into his war with Rome. He challenged his King in a respectful manner asking why such a thing was being ignored, Mithridates remarked that the war took priority that matters such as that could wait. Archaeus now realised the truth, his King had become so obsessed with his war against Rome that he was willing to destroy his Kingdom in the process.
With no other choice possible he turned against his King and contacted Legatus Arcturus with an offer of surrender. Arcturus agreed and before the final battle Archaeus surrendered to the Romans and gave information on the defences of the city as well as the location of Consul Cotta.
After the war was won and his King taken prisoner, Archaeus was released by Arcturus as a gesture of good will to the Kingdom of Pontus. But the former General did not wish to return home and instead offered his services to the Roman governor Thermus, who refused to allow him office but did allow him to aid the Roman ships in the hunting down of any remaining Pontic forces in Asia Minor or the scattered remnants of the Pirates.
Allies: North Africa
A Province of Rome conquered during the campaigns against the Carthaginians and the different client states they had along the North African Coast. Now a proper Roman province the region has seen an increase of trade and commerce as well as the increase of infrastructure including the slow construction of paved roads and aqueducts for the passage of people and water.
But under the surface the local tribes, the Nasamones who live beyond the coastal Romanised towns and cities, deep in the interior. Continue to live according to their own lives as well as the ever present rumours of discontent among some of the tribal elders and leaders.
Lunja: Livius Nasamones - Elder of Nasamones
An elder of the Nasamones "Berber" tribes of North Africa, Lunja has been a calming element within the various tribes of the region for decades under Roman Rule. Although she is a determined independent for the Tribes, she also sees the benefits of Rome in North Africa notably the increase of trade that brought greater boons to her people.
She is seen as a moderator between the tribes and Rome, though she very rarely interacts directly with the Roman authorities preferring to speak through messages and messengers. Quick witted and with a fork tongue so to speak, Lunja has managed to maintain the peace between the Nasamones despite many wishing to rebel or openly side with the Romans. Lunja prefers to remain at a sacred location for the tribes, the Infamous Court of Heavens, a location where there is plenty of water.
The Court of Heavens is considered a place of peace for the Nasamones, where violence is considered an act against their gods. So it is common to see traders from across the land meeting here as well as the infamous Camel Caravans from across the desert passing through on their journeys. For Lunja though she feels it to be an informal capital for the Nasamones and wishes to see the tribes continue to respect the neutrality of the location.
When rumours began to spread however, she knew she could no longer hold her neutrality forever and decided to make a move for the sake of her people. Using secret messengers she arranged a meeting between Pro Consul Lucullus and Queen Cleopatra VII of Eygpt following the rumours of Ptolemy preparing moves against Rome.
When she learned of the Murder of the Pro Consul, she pledged to aid the Legate of Legio Victrix in ensuring that those responsible did not go unpunished. Though Arcturus was always cautious around her, not because of her willingness to help, but he considered Lunja as a person who plays the long game, a person who wouldn't make a move unless it benefited her.
Barca: Dux, imperator, amicus consulis - Chieftain, Commander, Friend of the Consul
One of the many chiefs of the Nasamones tribes of the North Africa Province, Barca was born to a pro Roman tribe, that saw the Romans as a calming effort for the region. He liked that under the Romans the constant Squabbling between the Tribes declined to almost none existent, which enabled them to do far more than could before. His particular Tribe were close to where the Romans had established the Pro-Consul Villa which made them all the more closer, he was in favour of the construction of an Aqueduct across his ancestral lands to deliver fresh, clean water to other parts of the Province .Barca like his father before him was taken in by the Romans to act as an advisor for the Pro-Consul on matters of the tribes and how to best maintain control over the Province. He was taken in by Lucius Lucullus who after his term as Consul was later offered Pro-consulship of North Africa. Barca accepted as well and became a good supporting aid for the Pro consul.
At some point Barca was asked by Lucullus to go the coast and escort the Legate of Legio Victrix to the Villa to properly meet him. On their return however, Barca was suspicious at the Legionnaire present and passed on his thoughts to the Legate, who agreed. After the ambush and discovery of the murder of the Pro Consul, Arcturus asked Barca to aid him in the effort to "Avenge" the Pro Consul. Barca Agreed.
He would Aid Arcturus during the quelling of the Nasamones insurrection actively leading some of his tribe in final battle of the rebellion. After this Barca was chosen by Arcturus to be the Legatus of Legio Africanum, an auxiliary legion made up of Nasamones warriors trained and equipped as Roman soldiers.
Barca took the role with honour and served alongside his commander, now friend in the invasion of Egypt. After the Siege of Alexandria, Barac was allowed by the Senate to remain as Legatus of Legio Africanum to aid in the maintaining of law and order in the North Africa Province as well as helping Queen Cleopatra in rebuilding her kingdom.
Adversaries: North Africa
At Some point Arcturus shall come face to face with those who see the death of a Pro Consul as their chance to seize power and Independence from Roman domination. As the Nasamones tear themselves apart from in fighting, some elders and leaders seek to use the chaos to become self proclaimed freedom fighters.
Izil: dolosus, sacrilegus senior - Deceitful, Sacrilegious Elder
When Arcturus approached the Nasamones tribes to request aid for the Invasion of Egypt that they might avenge the murder of Lucius Lucullus. Many of the Tribal leaders were uncertain others were outright insulted that a Roman was asking for them to fight for a cause they had no interest in.But Izil was cunning, he first played the part of a man who was interested in providing help for the Romans, but understood the opinions of the waverers. He made a motion of sorts to the leaders of the tribes for the young Roman to go to the ancient burial grounds to undetake a trial of their gods. Arcturus agreed wishing to be respectful of their gods and beliefs.
But when the trial was about to begin, Izil and another Nasamones chief made their move, they had intended to use the opportunity to eliminate not only the Romans but the different leaders had no sided with them. Though Arcturus managed to escape with several leaders surviving, Izil fled and seized the strongest fortress in the region.
From this location alongside his few surviving allies, the rebels launched continous attacks against Rome and their allied tribes across the Region. This changed when Legio Victrix landed and countered the assault and eventually laid siege to the fortress, Izil made his final stand in the city and was eventually killed by Barca.
Warmakasan: Velox ad iram dux - Quick to Anger Chief
Young, inexperience, bold, brash and quick to anger. Warmakasan was the youngest of the Nasamaones chiefs to answer the call for a gathering at the Court of Heavens. Wishing to make a name for himself Warmakasan decided to openly challenge the Romans requests for help and made a clear point that if he could he would kill the Romans in the tent regardless of the sacred ground they stood on.
Although he was calmed, he made secret plans with Izil to lay a trap for the Romans and those willing to side with them at the burial grounds. Despite claiming to be respectful of his peoples beliefs he was all too willing to violate the sacred ground of his fathers fathers burials. During the ceremony, Warmakasan ordered his warriors to actively kill anyone who was not on their side, whether they be fellow Nasamones or Roman. He himself killed several neutral and pro roman chiefs alongside their bodyguards, despite his attempts to kill Arcturus his primary target, his willingness to try and claim the glory for himself lead to him facing him alone.
Though Arcturus was knocked down, the loyalty of his friends was clear when they came to his side and protected him and helped get him away. Bestia Tabat and Caeso however not only held back Warmakasan but managed to subdue him and take him prisoner.
Warmakasan made demands that he be killed seeing the imprisonment by Romans to be an insult. Arcturus made it clear that was what his fate would be, for he did not deserve death, for despite his many claims, Barca made clear that Warmakasan had violated the sacred traditions of their people and didn't deserve to die like a warrior.
Adversaries Turned Allies: North Africa
Not all seek independence from Rome, some in the Nasamones seek only to serve their people and continue their lives as they have done for generations. Yet the choice given to them by those who seek to cast out Rome from the region with the message of join us or die with the Romans. Then the Die is cast and a person must choose where his loyalties lie.
Borto: Fidus, vir amantissime - Loyal, Loving Husband
A chief of the Nasamones and a deeply loyal family man, Borto has the sole goal for the continued existence of his people and above all the wellbeing of his family. This has become so important to him after the learning that his beloved wife was with their first child.
This however was challenged during the Insurrection against Rome lead by Izil, at first Borto intended to maintain some neutrality for his tribe and keep them out of the fighting. However this did not come to pass as Izil had managed to convince his wife to join the cause and have her stay in the rebel stronghold.
Borto wanting to help his wife and ensure her safety gave his support for the rebellion and gave his warriors for the cause. Though again this did not last long, knowing that Borto did not really wish to fight or see his wife and unborn child put in the certain danger a siege would bring. Arcturus decided to act, he ordered elements of his Speculatores to infiltrate the fortified city and secretly extract his wife.
Though it came with trouble, Borto was reunited with his wife in the camp of Legio Victrix where he again switched sides and declared his backing for Rome. He ordered his tribes warriors to abandon the rebels and return home, Arcturus wishing to respect the mans wishes allowed his tribe to be given safe passage back to their village.
Allies: Aegyptus
Egypt is the Oldest Empire in the World, the Nile gave birth to its civilization and sustains the land still. When other Empires are long forgotten, the monuments of Egypt shall forever stand against the passage of time regardless of whomever claims rulership.
Now Ruled by a strong Greek dynasty founded by Ptolemy one of Alexander the Great's generals, Egypt under them has remained rich, powerful and influential, with ever renewing farmlands along the Nile each year.
Now Egypt stands on edge of an Abyss known as destruction for the might of Rome now stands upon its doorstep ready to claim the wealth of the kingdom for itself. Arcturus must remember his purpose and keep his allies close as he moves to dethrone a boy king.
Cleopatra VII: Dea et regina Nili - Goddess and Queen of the Nile
Elder sister and wife of Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII of Egypt, Cleopatra is regarded by those who look into her to be an incredible women. She was raised in Alexandria alongside her siblings and tutored in various areas of study, but she went further, she became the first of the Ptolemy line to be able to speak the true Egyptian language and respected the old gods that most Egyptians adhered to.
As well as this she spoke several other languages fluently and was a patron of the arts including poetry, philosophy and the sciences. As a young one she often spent time in the great library of Alexandria reading the various books and scrolls that the near infinite shelves held. The love and admiration that she holds from the majority of the Egyptian is so great that some deem her to be a living incarnation of a Goddess, which she has embellished and even come to believe herself.
Under the will of her father after his passing, she was to share power with her eldest Brother Ptolemy XIII, they were to share the ruling of Egypt and the powers it entitles. However at some point Ptolemy ousted his older sister and placed her under arrest, she was then escorted away from Alexandria and the Nile. However she would not reach the prison that was to hold her, during the travel she was freed by Arcturus Aquila and the Speculatores.
Cleopatra then explained that her brother had arranged the murder of Lucullus with the backing on an unknown Roman prominent who had made promises to her brother. She offered an alliance, if Arcturus would aid her in reclaiming her throne then she would aid him in uncovering who had wanted Lucullus dead.
For her safety it was decided that she would stay with Legio Victrix during the confrontation with the Nasamones and later during the Invasion of Egypt. To allow for greater comfort, Arcturus surrendered his personnel quarters to her and ordered that every curtesy should be given to the Queen. During her stay she was rather intrigued at the number of books and reading materials that Arcturus had brought with him, including the writings of Socrates.
Cleopatra also found a strange intrigue in the man himself, she was once seen observing the young Legate aiding the Legion in the construction of the camp and its defences not as an officer overseeing everything but as one of them actually getting his hands dirty with the shovelling of dirt, hammering of nails and poles to create platforms or towers. Those who saw her doing so, remarked that she had a small quirky smile on her face, during such nights she would often ask for him to dine with her and he did. Onlookers who say that the way they acted almost was if the two were becoming more than allies.
An element of this was shown following an attempted assassination of Cleopatra by Egyptian forces that had managed to infiltrate the Legions camp. Cleopatra came to no harm but it was only thanks to Arcturus that such an outcome came to be as he managed to protect her when an assassin got into her tent. During the raid Arcturus took a severe wound to his person which lead to him taking a fever, Cleopatra offered to help with his recovery.
Upon the victory in Egypt and the death of her brother and husband, Cleopatra became the sole ruler and Queen of all Egypt. Unlike her brother who did not have a great amount of support from the common people, Cleopatra was celebrated upon her taking of the throne as well as the various efforts she made in the first few months after the fall of Ptolemy.
After a period of Calm, Cleopatra VIII of Egypt made her first "Diplomatic" visit to Rome to solidify the Alliance between the Republic of Rome and the Kingdom of Egypt. Whilst in Rome she visited a "Personal" friend and gifted them and their family an piece of prime real estate in Egypt along the Nile for a "Summer" home.
Apollodorus: Protector deae - Protector of the Goddess
The right hand and personal bodyguard of Queen Cleopatra, Apollodorus is very rarely not in the same room as the queen he has sworn his life to. He was born to a noble Greek Family from Lower Egypt, raised in all the prestige and tutoring that came with such a wealthy family, he grew up in comfort and plenty.
His family were long standing servants and advisors to the Royal family for countless generations, some claiming as far back as the founding of the Ptolemaic Dynasty following the death of Alexander the Great, though its never been proven. Apollodorus was adamant in his continuing of the family tradition of service, he was first a young advisor for a local governor and later with some experience and proof of ability.
Was given a placement in the Royal Guard of the Pharaohs a placement that he respected deeply and with fierce determination. As time went on his loyalty and honourable service was noted by Pharaoh Ptolemy XII who now an old man decided to place the young man as the protector of his eldest daughter Cleopatra.
Apollodorus again was honoured by the task and undertook it with absolute vigor. When Cleopatra was sent away by her brother as a "Prisoner", Apollodorus was allowed to follow as she was still in her charge and under his protection. When the Queen was rescued by Arcturus Aquila and the Speculatores. For the remainder of the campaign Apollodorus remained alongside his Queen in the Roman camp as her devoted bodyguard throughout the campaigns in North Africa and Egypt never once leaving her side, except by her will.
Apollodorus was badly wounded following an attempted raid by Egyptian forces on the Legions camp, whilst trying to defend his Queen. He took a bad slash to the back of his right leg above the knee, this left him crippled for the remainder of the conflict but he continued to serve as best he could despite the injury.
After the defeat of King Ptolemy, Apollodorus stayed with his Queen standing beside her throne protecting her from any of the remaining loyalists of the former fallen king.
Kore: Servus fidelis deae - Loyal servant of the Goddess
Born into servitude, Kore came from a true Egyptian family who stood by the old gods rather than the those brought by the Greeks generations before. As with many members of her family she has served the Pharaohs since a young age, from her father who served as a carer of the Royal Stables to her Mother who served as a cook and servant.
Kore was soon placed under the charge of caring for and serving the young princess Cleopatra, a place that despite her inexperience she found a true privilege. Later as time would go on Kore would serve her Princess and later when Cleopatra became Queen, by this point Kore had become an experienced and loyal servant to the "Goddess". Even when offered the choice she chose to go with her Queen and continue to serve her in whatever form was required.
After the Queens rescue she would travel with her "Goddess" to the Roman encampment and continue to serve now instead of serving within a palace she would serve her Queen who now stayed in the relative comfort of the Legatus Tent which Kore was also allowed to stay within. She continued the duty of serving meals and aiding her Queen in preparations for the day such as cleaning and getting dressed and arranging her various jewels.
When required however Kore also bares another task, due to her similar likeness to the Queen in age and build, should the need come. Kore would gladly take on the role of a double for her Queen to divert any would be dangers away from the real Queen and allow her to escape to safety.
And if necessary give her life so that Cleopatra can live on. Though this has never come to pass.
Raia: Sacerdotis veteris Fidei - Priestess of the Old Faith
A determined, fun loving, devoted priestess of the old faith of Egypt within Memphis at the temple of Ubaste. Raia is considered by many to be a strange person not because of how she acts or behaves but because of her almost willing nature to call someone a friend. This comes evident whenever anyone performs a kind and generous act to a cat or feline.
Where she would say that such a person would have a friend in her regardless of where they are from. Something that sometimes gets her into some trouble with the other priestesses who considered her openness to others to be a odd trait for someone serving the old faith.
Eventually Raia decided to commit herself to travel, she began first by heading north to Alexandria where she found the city to be very different from the one she had left behind. She felt a strange sense of sadness at the lack of respect for the old faith with the temples being run down and decayed while those of the Greeks were in greater care and splendour. She would later follow the coastline to the west speaking to people as she went and making friends with many more cats.
At some point she found herself in the Roman province of North Africa near Cyrene, here she changed direction and headed back in land where following the villages and towns. She encountered the caravan transporting Queen Cleopatra though she didn't realise it, witnessing the ambush of the Speculatores, she believed that the Caravan was under attack and tried to help. She took her staff and swung it at the leader of the Romans attacking again and again until she was finally stopped upon seeing the Queen.
After an explanation, Raia apologised for her actions and offered to her services to the Queen as means of making amends. Cleopatra did not bat an eyelid and accepted, claiming they would need the gods on their side, Raia's first question though was if she could bring her cats. Despite the annoyance at first by the members of the Legio Victrix, the mood quickly changed when her cats very swiftly dealt with the camps continuous rodent problem that had thought to have been a curse for weeks.
During her time in the camp she became a loyal aid, servant and advisor to Queen Cleopatra and Legate Arcturus Aquila on matters of the Egyptian people and the old faith.
Adversaries: Aegyptus
Egypt is in danger, it stands divided small bands of rebels conduct a Guerrilla War against its armies in the more rugged and mountainous regions of lower Egypt. Political intrigue continues to flood the halls of the Palace as Sycophants vie for the ear of the Pharaoh, all the while the kingdom struggles to maintain the delicate peace between old and new, Egyptian and Hellenic.
Arcturus must recognise the strengths and weaknesses that remains in Egypt and use the weaknesses to his advantage in bringing the invasion and war to a swift conclusion.
Ptolemy: Pharao Aegypti - Pharaoh of Egypt
Son and heir, continuing the duty of his namesake, Ptolemy the XIII comes from an old dynasty of Egyptian royalty. Being the direct heir of the original Ptolemy, the general who served alongside Alexander the Great and seized Egypt upon his death.
The Boy King as some refer to him as, came to power upon the death of his father of the same name, upon his crowning as Pharaoh was immediately married to his older sister Cleopatra who was to serve both as his wife and his queen continuing the long standing tradition of maintaining a pure blood line in the Royal family.
But Ptolemy began to show very early a streak of madness and began to make decisions that went against many traditions and beliefs of the Egyptian people. This came both from his own mind but also from the words whispered into his ear by some of his early advisors, but eventually it was all his decisions which lead to him casting out his sister wife and queen.
Now as the sole Ruler of Egypt Ptolemy was quick to push for his ideas for the future of Egypt but none of them were showing the benefits for the people. This made more and more people turn against him, with many beginning to either secretly wish for a change of Pharaohs, others openly defying his rule and rising in revolt.
It was at this time that Ptolemy was approached by a "Representative of Rome" who offered a favourable treaty for trade and commerce which would bring a great amount of wealth to his kingdom. However Ptolemy was "Warned" that a fellow Roman was against this treaty which could allow him to break the resistance against his rule. So Ptolemy recruited a group of soldiers to impersonate roman legionnaires and had them assassinate the Roman Pro Consul for North Africa.
What he didn't realise was that such an action would lead to his eventual downfall as Rome went to war and invaded Egypt with Two Legions and the backing of those in Egypt who wanted to see him removed from the Throne.
Talus: Fidelis Generalis Pharaonis - Loyal General of the Pharaoh
Proud, determined and ferociously loyal to the throne of Egypt, Talus was born into a excessively proud noble family of Greek descent from the time of Alexander the Great. This Pride lead him to become one of the most loyal of the different Generals of Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII leading his troops against any enemy that made itself known.
Talus is among the most strategic minds on regards of the Egyptian military, a strong warrior in his own right and a good mind for leadership Talus is one that understands the strengths of Egypt's army. He recognises that their army is still heavily reliant on the organisation of the Phalanx with its infantry and the speed of its cavalry, which whilst effective.
He knew that some nations including Rome had faced such tactics before and defeated them. He first learned of the declaration of war between Rome and Egypt whilst he was busy attempting to deal with bands of rebels conducting a guerrilla war against the Pharaoh in lower Egypt. Upon learning of this he immediately returned to Alexandria to aid in the forming and organising of the Pharaohs armies, from Alexandria he attempted to get a proper structure for the upcoming war.He knew full well that at first Rome was too busy dealing with the Nasamones insurrection to properly move on Egypt, which gave him the time he needed to prepare. Whilst the other Generals wanted to use the opportunity to launch an attack, Talus was against it, for he knew that if they attacked when Rome was ready they would be beaten all the more easier. He retorted that it would be better for them to remain in Egypt and fortify where they could and prevent the Romans from getting a food hold in Egypt. And if they did then their armies could encircle them.
But this was with the information he had that they would be facing only a single Roman Legion, when it was learned that two legions were coming against them, his plan was easily shattered. With Two Roman legions crossing the border into Egypt he would have to spread out and force his limited forces of conscripts to cover more ground. Eventually his skill as a General was tested time and time again as Arcturus Aquila commanded his legions in a series of successful attacks which were aided by the Egyptian rebels fighting their guerrilla war for Cleopatra's return.
Eventually Talus was forced to withdraw all his forces to Alexandria in a desperate attempt to hold back the Roman onslaught. Though he and his troops fought valiantly they were soon defeated and upon learning of the death of the Pharaoh Talus finally had no other choice and surrendered.
Adversaries turned Allies: Aegyptus
Egypt is in danger, it stands divided small bands of rebels conduct a Guerrilla War against its armies in the more rugged and mountainous regions of lower Egypt. Political intrigue continues to flood the halls of the Palace as Sycophants vie for the ear of the Pharaoh, all the while the kingdom struggles to maintain the delicate peace between old and new, Egyptian and Hellenic.
As Egypt divides further and further apart, Arcturus has the opportunity to gain allies from his former foes, people who know the land, know the people and above all he must learn how these allies can help him and his legions.
Neos: Bellator veteris Fidei - Warrior of the Old Faith
Faithful, loyal and humble, Neos was a proud servant of the Pharaohs since his childhood, like Talus he came from an old noble family. Though unlike his close friend he came from a family that descended from an old Egyptian family that was proud to continue the old faith of the true Egyptian Gods.
Despite this they were loyal the Ptolemaic dynasty for generations with Neos continuing the tradition of service. He would proudly serve alongside his old friend Talus as a leader of the Egyptian military throughout his life, though unlike Talus who was fiercely loyal to the Pharaoh. Neos questioned at times the actions of their ruler who seemed to forsake the beliefs and traditions of the people, though most of the time such descent was quiet and in private.
This changed however with the exile of Queen Cleopatra, Neos being a traditionalist and a speaker of the Egyptian language had respect for the Queen and didn't believe the reasons for her exile. Though again such descent was personal and behind closed doors, until the "Rescue" of the Queen by Roman Speculatores, Neos was ordered to lead a force of the Egyptian military to recapture the escaped Queen, bring her and her conspirators back to Alexandria to face justice.
Despite his hesitation due to the rumours that small bands of rebels had begun to fight against Ptolemy forces in the more distant regions of the Kingdom, he heeded his duty and went in pursuit. Though he was unable to catch the Queen in her escape he was able to catch a force of Egyptians and Nasamones loyal to her in a small fortress. Laying siege to a fortress of "Traitors" Neos lead his army in a relatively successful effort to defeat the rebels. But this effort would eventually fail when a Roman Legion came upon his flank in full battle order, caught between a strong force of Romans on one side and the fortress on the other he retreated.
Upon his return to Egypt he learned that there had indeed been small pockets of rebellion against the Pharaoh, during his intended journey back to Alexandria. He passed through a village that had been burned to the ground for allegedly supporting rebels, he grew dissolution at the loyalty he had shown Alexandria and the Pharaoh. To the point that he would make the decision to surrender, during the darkness of the night he snuck out of his encampment and rode as fast as he could back across the border.
He found the Roman encampment and wilfully surrendered to the Romans and his exiled Queen, despite everything he offered his services in the hopes of repaying the debt of disloyalty he had shown to the Queen and the people of Egypt. Cleopatra was merciful and asked the Legatus for the same, he agreed but did make an offer. Intelligence had already come that small bands of rebels were fighting Ptolemy already but they were unable to truly fight against the Egyptian armies. Arcturus Aquila had Neos return to Egypt with a small band of loyal Egyptians and some Speculatores to take command of the rebels and lead an effective guerrilla war against the Egyptian military.
Neos being a military man knew full well how to be effective, under his command the rebels operating across Egypt began to target small Egyptian patrols, supply caravans, supply outposts etc. The aim being to stretch the Egyptian forces further whilst the Romans launched their attack, whilst their attacks would also deny supplies of arms and equipment that the armies needed to properly fight the Romans in battle.
Eventually he would recieve word to gather his forces near Alexandria to join the Roman Legions in the final assault. Despite the fact that his forces barely numbered a few hundred it showed that Egyptians had a hand in the deposing of the boy king. Upon their victory, Neos was formally forgiven and pardoned by Cleopatra and was made the Royal General of the Egyptian military.
Amaya: confusus, ambiguus, famulus - Confused, Doubtful, Servant
A humble and loyal servant and advisor to the Throne of Egypt, Amaya has long held the position of a chief advisor, a role that is usually reserved for a man. But years of manoeuvring and proving herself lead to he becoming the first woman ever to be given the task.
With the job she has the singular purpose of advising whomever sits upon the Throne of Egypt on how to best rule over the Kingdom and its people. At first Amaya's advise and opinions were well found within the halls of the Palace in Alexandria, but over time things changed as they always do. Ptolemy began to rely less and less on the advise and thoughts of his advisors, preferring instead to listen to the sycophants who only told him what he wanted to hear and nothing else.
Though she was still officially the Chief Advisor, most of what she recommended to Ptolemy either was not agreed with or outright Ignored. This was only made worse following Cleopatra's exile and the new trade agreement with the Romans, though Amaya was agreed to the treaty that would allow greater trade between Egypt and Rome. She did question how much influence the Roman Representative was showing over the Pharaoh, she especially advised against the Boy kings plan to assassinate a Roman Pro Consul. Knowing full well that such an act would likely result in outright war with Rome.
But again her words were either not heeded or ignored in favour of the sycophants in the palace who only saw what the Pharaoh saw favourable. At one point her pleads with the Pharaoh lead her to be removed from her place as Advisor and sent to Memphis under guard. There she would remain under house arrest in a lavish home with servants but never allowed to leave due to the soldiers at every entrance.
During a riot that turned to a revolt in the city she was able to escape and flee, during her escape however she accidently ran into Queen Cleopatra who was attempted to also escape the fighting after challenging her brother at a festival to Seraphis. Knowing who she was, Amaya immediately offered herself to the Queen alive or dead. Cleopatra remembering the woman before her as someone who was a keen advisor graciously accepted.
Amaya would return with her Queen to the Roman Encampment and would regain her position as chief advisor though it was now to the Queen rather than the Pharaoh. Cleopatra unlike Ptolemy actually listened to her advice and opinions on matters which Amaya was grateful, she would continue this job after the victory at the Siege of Alexandria advising her Queen in the reconstruction of Egypt from the war.
Adversaries: Gaul
The Lands of Gaul are not a unified nation, it is made up of various tribes that often war with one another on a nearly annual basis. Though alliances can arise at times, such usually come from a common enemy that the tribes share at the same time.
While some seek peace with Rome and its Republic recognising that its more of a benefit to trade with the southerners rather than fight them when there is no need. But some seek revenge for the actions of Rome in generations past and are willing to drag the whole of Gaul into all out war.
Gorlacon: Iratus, ulciscens, truculentus Rex Gallic - Angry, Vengeful, Brutal Gallic King
To call Gorlacon spiteful is to be considered miniscule, Gorlacon is a brutal Gallic king who seeks only a singular achievement the complete and utter destruction of Romans. A generation or two before his tribe the Volca had once inhabited an area of southern Gaul on the shores of the Mediterranean, then Rome came to back its ally of Massilia the Greek city on the southern coast.
The Gauls were either subjugated or forced to retreat north, among the tribes push out of their lands was Gorlacons, as a child he witnessed the brutal subjugation of those that remained first hand. Having lost his grandfather, father and older brothers during an attempted rebellion against Roman rule, those that survived including Gorlacon himself were forced north where they had to fight almost everyday to gain some territories to call their own.
When he came of age, Gorlacon took over his small tribe and began making moves to increase his power so that he might one day take revenge on Rome. His opportunity came when word began to spread that traders from Gaul were being granted passage to Rome itself, he was aided in this by an unknown individual who offered support for his cause.
Using the occasion to his advantage, he ordered bands of his warriors to take up the mantel of merchants and gain access to the city where they would cause havoc killing anyone they can, burn as much of the city as possible and incite fear. The attack that followed was brutal with countless innocents being killed in the blood bath of a single night, by the time it ended much of the city had seen brutal murders and burnings.
The Senate vowed revenge and launched an invasion of Gaul, Gorlacon used the Roman invasion as an excuse to rally more tribes to his cause of vengeance against the outlanders. Many heeded the call as he had been making arguments for years that Rome would one day come for them, so smaller tribes rallied to his leadership.
The Gallic tribes that joined Gorlacon began a long and protracted war of aggression and scorched earth, rather than face the Roman armies on the battlefield. Gorlacons followers instead retreated and found shelter in the depths of the forests and hills of Gaul, instead of facing the Romans head on, they would perform hit and run attacks against the Roman legions, harassing supply lines, slaughtering isolated garrisons, ambushing patrols etc.
All the while Gorlacon ordered that as the Romans advanced the Gauls were to destroy everything that could be used by the Romans, food, grain for horse, homes for shelter anything and everything that could be of use was to be either taken or burned. Over time this attrition began to show as the Roman advance slowed, but Gorlacon was still unable to truly beat the Romans.
Enraged he began to actively force tribes that had either sided with the Romans or wished to remain neutral to join his side. His armies were said to drag people from their houses, neutral villages were burned without any provacation, many tribes such as the Arverni began to question Gorlacons intentions. When he learned that the Arverni intended to seek a peace treaty with Rome, he tricked the Romans, by having his soldiers attack the leading Roman General and placing the blame on the Arvenri.
During the siege of Alesia, Gorlacon lead his armies personally against the besieging Romans, who were occupied trying to breach the fortified town. But eventually the deception was uncovered and the Arverni sided with the Romans in repelling Gorlacon and his army.
Following his defeat at Alesia, Gorlacon went into hiding with the remainder of his army, though now his ruthlessness had been revealed to the Gauls, Legio Victrix with the support of Vercingetorix launched a renewed campaign against him.
After the defeat of Alesia, Gorlcaon lead what remained of his broken army to a fortress controlled by his Niece, believing that there he could regroup, rally fresh troops and renew his war against Rome. After he arrived, his army made camp with few defences in place believing themselves to be safe and even if attacked they could retreat into the fortress. But sadly that never came as the Romans had been tipped of.
Under the cover of night a Roman legion with an auxilliary legion in support took up position and rained fire down upon them with ballista, onager and arrow. Those that escaped the flames retreated Gorlacon included towards the fortress, but to his dismay he there learned that his own blood had betrayed him. Gorlacon was swiftly captured despite his demands to be killed, he was escorted to Rome where he was to face ceremonial execution, though troubles in Rome put that on Hold.
Corda: Bellum saltus brutalis dux -Brutal forest war chief
A fierce war chief loyal to Gorlacons cause, Corda is a hardened woodsmen who has spent his entire life in the forests and hills of Gaul. In the past he was focused on the hunting and trapping of animals in the woods, rabbit, boar and deer which he would trade to villagers and townsmen for a profit.
But when Gorlacon launched his war against Rome, Corda was quick to join. Seeing the mans experience in the wilderness, Gorlacon made Corda one of his primary war chiefs, a commander of sorts who task was to lead groups of warriors. Corda used his war band as an effective insurrection launching guerrilla styled attacked against Roman forces across Gaul.
His use of expert archers became infamous among the Legions, as their patrols would be peppered by arrows flying from the trees and bushes that covered the sides of the few proper paths and roads through the region. Corda even lead small raids against Roman encampments, his archers would kill sentries and lookouts and then he would lead his warriors over the walls and into the camps themselves in order to cause havoc.
On one occasion he lead a raid on the primary fortified camp of Legio Victrix which had been the vanguard of the Roman Invasion. Despite his best efforts Corda would fail in his primary goal of eliminating the Legions Legate, though he was very nearly successful in killing the Legate however it ended only with the man losing his left eye from a slash of Corda' dagger.
Corda himself was killed during the Gauls attempt to escape the camp when it became clear that they could not win. In twist of irony for a man with years of bowmen-ship under us belt, Corda was killed by a female companion of the Legatus who too had many years of practice with the Bow.
Adversaries Turned Allies: Gaul
The Warlike Arverni are one of many Celtic Tribes in Gaul, And worthy of respect. Sophisticated in War and Peace, cultured and Clever, they are one of the descendants of the warriors who terrorised Rome in its past and rampaged as far as Tharce, Macedon and Illyria.
Though Recently under a new King, the Arverni have become more focused on the creation of a confederation to oppose Roman Expansion but not through war but the presentation of equal power, one that will cause Rome to turn away from Gaul in favour of easier conquests.
Vercingetorix: Patronus, pacis optans, rex Arvernorum- Protector, Peace wisher, King of the Arverni
As King of the Arverni tribe of Gaul, Vercingetorix is the ruler of one of the most powerful gallic tribes of central Gaul. Most of this power and influence comes from the tribes military prowess with its strong warriors having to constantly conduct raids and battles with those of their neighbours.
Vercingetorix is a warrior king like his predecessors however in recent years he has observed the military power of the south notably in Rome growing ever closer. From his allies across Gaul, he learned of Rome's rapid expansion into other parts of the world such as Hispania to his south west and the Greeks far to his east. Recognising that only geography and a lack of interest was all that was holding the Romans from marching north, Vercingetorix decided that the need to act was evident.
Unlike his fore fathers however he chose not to pursue a course of active aggression against the Romans, instead he began a longer and greater goal of creating a unified Gallic Confederation. A single alliance of the gallic tribes that could present a solid defence against any Roman provocation, the idea being that if Rome showed any sign of moving on them the Tribes of Gaul would cease their feuds with each and unite to face a common enemy.
His hope was that by doing so the Romans would prefer to stay away from Gaul deeming it to be too much hassle for little gain. At first his proposal was supported by other tribes such as the Aedui to his south west who sat closer to the Romans.
Sadly his hopes for peace were dashed when Gallic warriors launched a surprise attack on Rome itself, what followed was a swift and brutal invasion of Gaul by the Roman Legions. Vercingetorix once again attempted to prompt peace with the invaders in the hopes that even if the Romans won then the Gauls may be given some semblance of their culture and beliefs.
But as the war dragged on, with more and more tribes being pulled into the ruthless aggressive methods of Gorlacon, Vercingetorix and the Arverni were forced to withdraw from all talks with Rome. He ordered his people to retreat to their tribes great fortress town of Alesia where he hoped they could "shelter the storm", but when the Romans attacked he had little choice and ordered his warriors to battle.
During the siege however Gorlacons deception was uncovered and Vercingetorix realising the betrayl and the understanding that Gorlacon had been the one to provoke Rome by attacking it first, pledged himself to the Roman cause of defeating his fellow Gauls. With some permission of the Senate back in Rome, Vercingetorix was granted the right to continue to rule the Arverni though only as a client state of the Republic. His warriors were drafted into an Auxiliary legion, Legio Gallica and were sent to fight alongside their former opponents of Legio Victrix in fighting Gorlacon and his allies.
Once the war was all but over and Gorlacon was in chains, Vercingetorix returned to Alesia to try and rebuild his tribes home as well as aid in the turning of Gaul into a full Roman Province.
Amena: Sanguis non densior - Blood is not thicker
The niece of Gorlacon himself, Amena is the only child of the sister of Gorlacon who was one of the only family members of the man himself to survive the escape of their tribe from Roman occupation into central Gaul. Her mother was wedded to a powerful tribal king of the Lingones Tribe of eastern Gaul which forged an alliance between the Volca and the Lingones which would come into play during the war with Rome.
After her parents passed away she took on the mantle of leadership for her tribe but sadly this changed when her dear uncle merged their two tribes into one to "Bring shared power" but Amena knew that it was all so he would have more for his planned vengeance with Rome. But he did not forget his niece.
When the war with Rome broke out, Gorlacon gave Amena the rulership of the most dominate fortress he had under his control. A mighty series of fortifications that were built into the mountain cliffs of the region, various caverns had been converted centuries before into a mighty fortress, with some caverns going up into the cliffs where royals and nobility could look out over the landscape from windowed vantage points. Whilst other caves were converted into living quarters, store houses, forges and armouries, walls and towers defended the outside ready to ensure that any attack would be suicidal.Amena remained here for the majority of the war between the Gallic tribes and Rome, though she kept updated constantly as to what was occurring across the land. She learned very quickly of her Uncles brutal methods of defeating the Romans, though at first she understood why, denying the Romans what they needed to fight. Things changed when she learned of the forceful nature of Gorlacon actively making the Tribes of Gaul join him whether they wanted to or not.
After the defeat at Alesia and the defection of some of the most powerful tribes in Gaul to the side of the Romans including the Arverni and the Aedui. Amena readied herself for the inevitable surrender of her people and her Uncle, but when she learned that Gorlacon had continued his brutal methods of destruction even when it was being done to those who were supposedly his allies up to and including the execution of those he believed to be traitors to the cause, such as those who thought they could remain neutral. She began to realise that her Uncle was more concerned about his Vengeance against the Romans that actually wanting to serve his people.
Understanding that as long as her Uncle remained the war would never stop nor would the killing, nor the brutality her people were facing. She was given a message from Gorlacon informing her that he was leading what remained of his army to her fortress where they would regroup. But at the same time she learned that he had burned a small farming village to the ground and killed countless in it because they wanted nothing to do with war and intended to surrender to the Romans.
Seeing the writing on the wall, Amena secretly sent a message to the leading Roman legate informing him of the location of Gorlacon and that if he attacked, she would ensure that Gorlacon nor his army could enter the fortress. If successful she would willingly surrender to the Romans and accept becoming a vassal under Roman Rule. She then set to work gaining the support and loyalty of all the warriors in the fortress though it was relatively easy, they all had heard the stories and rumours of what their supposed noble king had been doing with many losing loved ones and family members to their kings scorched Earth policy.
At Night Gorlcaon and his army was caught unawares by the Roman assault lead by Legatus Aquila and backed by the Gallic auxiliaries under Vercingetorix. He attempted to flee with those most loyal to the fortress but found the gates closed and locked, after he was captured, Amena herself came out and surrendered the fortress to the Romans.
She would later join Vercingetorix in turning Gaul from a patchwork of warring tribes into a new Roman Province.
Atroxus: Fidus bellator Arvernorum - A faithful warrior of the Arverni
Born to a influential Noble family of the Arverni Tribe, Atroxus grew up in relative peace never once having to undertake the manual labour that many in the tribe went through notably the life of farming crops and the caring of cattle. Instead he became and a fierce warrior in the service of his tribes King, eventually he would be recognised for his skill with the sword, spear and shield as well as his keen ability as a leader of men.
Originally he was sent with his warriors to face their fellow Gauls from tribes around the Arverni tribes territories, though over time his need as a warrior declined as his king Vercingetorix began to shift his attention from his neighbours who he wanted as allies against the real enemy to the south in the Romans.
When war came, Atroxus was determined in his opinions of joining the resistance against the Invaders wanting to lead his host of warriors against the Roman legions and show the power of the Arverni. But again Vercingetorix was against it wishing to keep their tribe out of the fight, whilst he did indeed question the decision of his king, he understood eventually why, as one by one Gallic tribes around them were forced to pick a side, those that sided with the Romans were burned by Gorlacons men whilst those who sided with Gorlacon were easily beaten and enslaved by the Romans.
When news came of the Roman advance on Alesia, Vercingetorix ordered Atroxus to lead the resistance and defence of the town from any attack. Atroxus took this task to new heights, he ordered for the entire tribe to aid in the effort, he had those who could reinforce the stone walls around the town. Any and all foods and supplies from surrounding villages and farmsteads were brought into the safety of the walls, any tree tall or large enough to be used for siege equipment was cut down or burned.
Such preparations aided the people in Alesia for a while, until finally the Romans managed to make a small breach in the stone walls around the town. Atroxus lead the resistance commanding several counter attacks against the Romans whenever they attempted an assault through the breach. By this point word had finally gotten through that Gorlacon had manipulated the Gallic tribes and was responsible for igniting the war between Gaul and the Romans. When orders came, Atroxus alongside his King formally surrendered to the Romans, after Vercingetorix offered to aid the Romans in fighting Gorlacon and his allies, Atroxus followed suit and readily joined the new Auxiliary Legion, Legio Gallica by the time the war was won he was the Secundo Imperio, the second in Command with many thinking that he would eventually take overall command of the Legion itself.
Lurca: ferox constituta Britannian bellator - Fierce Determined British Warrior
Coming from lands beyond Gaul, from lands that can only be seen on the horizon across a stretch of open water to the North, beyond cliffs of pale white. Lurca is a warrior woman from a place that is known only in myth and legend, few Romans have ever travelled so far from the Mediterranean to see such a place.
So much of Lurca's life remains a mystery, what is known. She is a nomad never remaining in a single place for more than few days offering her skill with the sword to any who would have her. This lead to her to become an unofficial mercenary among the Gallic tribes though few really accepted her extreme side when it came to the manner in which she revelled in battle.
Eventually she found some excitement in the fighting ring, where a Gallic chief had built an form of fighting arena where warriors would fight in show battles. This served a dual purpose for some it was a pure sense of entertainment, for others notably warriors, it allowed them to vent their frustration and resolve disputes without the need for tribal warfare.
Lurca was quick to take the challenge of the Fighting Ring and despite not being a Gaul swiftly rose through the ranks to become the reigning champion which she held until the invasion of Rome. With war now outright across Gaul, Lurca found herself without any new challengers as the warriors all returned to their tribes to protect their loved ones.
Wanting to find new challenges to face Lurca worked with Gorlacon in resisting the Roman invaders with her aiding in the tactic of scorched earth across Gaul. However whenever the opportunity to fight the Romans came she was frustrated when they didn't allowing the Romans to continue their advance. Furious she challenged Gorlacon's leadership and left to find a new challenge, she eventually found her way to Alesia just in time for the Roman siege, where she offered her services to the Defenders.
When the truth was revealed however, Lurca was once again lost, despite being a warrior she had begun to see that all her fighting had been for nothing. She had witnessed and even took part in the brutal methods Gorlacon had been using to resist the Romans, yet she now began to realise that what she had been doing was wrong. Wishing to atone for her failings and the blindness her vanity had over her she offered her services to the new Legio Gallica and served alongside the Romans she had once fought against.
Upon the Roman victory in Gaul, Lurca was unsure as to her next move, on the one hand she contemplated returning to her homeland beyond the sea. But at the same time she had found Honourable warriors among the Romans people she had come to respect and deem worthy of her loyalty.
