The Known and Forgotten: What Happened here?
As a reminder the story follows mankind's first interstellar colony, of how the company that funded it created a slave labor force that could breath the toxic air without any form of protective equipment or breathing apparatus.
Slowly the treatment of these people became worse and worse until finally they rose in rebellion destroying everything in their path. The company although responsible for everything happening to the colony, declared themselves the victims and called on the United Nations Space Fleet to come protect them, which they did, the rebel slaves now branded as Marauders retreated beyond the wall and into the wilds where they forged themselves a society of their own taming the dangerous animals that inhabited the wilds.
This part of the story is based two centuries later.
Interview with former Captain William Miles, he was tasked by the Liberator Military Command to lead a team of special forces and researchers in 2430 to do research on the long abandoned human colony of Titana. Mr. Miles is the only member of the mission who has agreed to speak about it on record since the official public inquiry. A recording of the interview was permitted within the interview and I thank the U.N prison system for permitting this interview and the recording of it.
Interview date: 21st October 2434
Miles: there were ten of us all together, 6 soldiers not including me, and the three scientists, our job was to look into the Decay of the buildings and defenses on Titana in the hop that a base could be built or an outpost for the military to work out off.
Interviewer: Why is that Exactly ?
Miles: Because the sector had been seeing a rise in criminal activity mostly smugglers and the occasional pirate, the hope was a base or outpost could aid the fleet in defending civilian Sub Sonic or FTL (Faster than Light) Routes through the sector... So obviously we would need to see if the original site of the colony and the wall defending it from the native animals would be a suitable location.
Interviewer: Were you excited?
Miles: At first we were excited.... Yeah.. because no one had ever done this before.... I mean the UN had established outposts before but they were usually on asteroids, moons or worlds that had no previous habitation... but this was something new.... you know... we had never really looked into a long abandoned Colony.
Interviewer: What were you expectations about the Colonies condition?
Miles: We all had mixed feelings and expectations because the colony had been abandoned around 2256, and that was around 200 years ago so we... we were expecting... you know ruined buildings barely holding up, walls covered up by plant life.... you know almost a jungle overgrowing the city.
Laughter
Miles: When we were doing our aerial surveillance of the colony.... basically flying around the city, the domed farmsteads and then finally the Wall.... We all could see that our expectations were very close.... their were plants overgrowing nearly everything...
Laughter from Captain Miles
Miles: I remember this one tree we saw.... it was as we were coming over the northern stretch of the wall there was this tree sat atop it, reaching up with its roots stretching down on either side to the ground... We were all amazed but of course we had to focus and get ready to be dropped off, and get the camp set up.
Interviewer: Can you describe the make up of your camp? What was involved in it and such?
Miles: Yeah... I mean it was rather simple really we brought with us reinforced living blocks, which are the blocks that are used for outposts, with airlocks, solar panels, sleeping quarters inside etc... etc..... we had three of them and inside were bunks and small kitchens.... Outside though.... we had um.... some old sentry turrets and emergency sensors... and these were the smaller versions, basically a gun atop a tripod... and we had six of them and we made sure to spread them out so they surrounded the camp.
Interviewer: To defend your camp? to alert you if anything camp close?
Miles: Uhuh, yep...thats right.... and after we did that we got straight to work..... first thing we all wanted to see was the wall....the legendary wall of Titana........ see the wall was built kind of like a semi circle, it came out of the sea on one side....skirted around the colony.. the city... all the homesteads and then back into the sea on the other side....We were all really excited... I tell ya
Interviewer: You were all excited to see the wall huh?
Miles:Yeah well you see the official story of Titana and the colony....and why it was abandoned was that there was a major case of civil unrest... which eventually lead to an armed revolt against the colonial administration and the Mining company funding the colonies progress.....So we wanted to see if the wall had any damage from the fighting or the degrade of the colony.....
Interviewer: And did you?
Miles: No... we came across something else.....
Moment of silence
Miles: What we found atop the wall made some of us begin to question the whole story....
Interviewer: What did you find?
Miles: We found bodies, skeletons still inside their protective suits.....At first we thought it was scavengers, coming for scrap, but the equipment was really old.... probably the time of the colony... the skeletons were stretched out all along the wall in different ways.... some looked like they had been stabbed.... we could see the pierces in their suits others were shot with projectile weapons... you know bullets....
Interviewer: What did you think happened?
Miles: At first.... well we all first thought they were killed during the Civilian revolt like the official story says....That they were forgotten about by the colony during the fighting hence why the bodies weren't collected and given proper burial..... And really its a reasonable thought truth be told.... you know.... after all we didn't know what really happened two centuries ago.... so we couldn't guess what happened here.... so we dismissed the bodies and looked into the walls structure... to see if it was holding.... which it was.... but barely.... after that we just returned to camp.... And well not thinking we just activated the emergency sensors, instead of them and the Sentry guns cause we thought we didn't need them.
Interviewer: I'm guessing from your tone... you did?
Miles: During the night a sensor went off, and alerted us that something was close by.... we just thought it was a bird or something like that....but then we started to hear something knocking over things in the perimeter..... I woke up Tommy and Wilks, and we went out to have a look.... we took our weapons obviously..... but by the time we got our suits on and breathers set and got outside whatever it was had disappeared into the night.... the center of the camp was a mess, Crates had been pushed over and emptied..... our ration cases were all over the floor and our spare parts had been tossed around..... we just guessed that it was an animal or something curious about us and probably thought it could get a meal from something in the crates or something.... so we just went back to bed.
Interviewer: What happened the next day?
Miles: We went into the city... which was basically a city beneath a giant reinforced glass dome close by the sea... and it was there that we found the truth.
Interviewer: What did you find?
Miles: At first we found what we had expected to find, the city had been breached by nature, the dome had cracks and holes in it so we couldn't take our breathers off.... the inside was covered in all kinds of plants and flowers.... at first we found it beautiful..... but that's when Tessa found something that broke the ice.... she had found on several.... no really all of the buildings markings from firearms...... we dismissed it at first, still believing the civil revolt story.... but she then pointed out their positions and directions.... all the marking were outwards.... whomever was fighting was trying to stop someone or something from getting into the city.
Interviewer: How did you feel seeing this?
Miles: unsure.... unsure of myself.... I mean for all I knew it could have been colonial forces fighting off rebels but... it didn't make any sense.... in all my experience and knowledge when civil unrest become an armed civil uprising it usually takes place from within the city not outside it..... so it made me begin to think why it was the rebels were fighting to get in when they would have already been in........ but as we wandered the overgrown streets.... looking at the many scars of battle that were very, very clear in the shops and houses that dotted the street.... some had walls missing probably from an explosive.... others had scorch marks almost permanently burned into them.... one of the scientists Dan he looked at one and his scan found that the burn was well over 200 years old....
Interviewer: So there was some form of heavy fighting in the city? Could it have been the revolt that was mention in the official report?
Miles: At first we thought so.... revolts divide society so it may have been a civil uprising that brought the damage but.... there was something wrong with everything... the destruction was too systematic.... you know... it was too organized... it didn't look like random bombing or mortar shells... it look more like someone wanted to burn down the city..... make the city light up.... We got curious so we decided to make our way to the old Corporate headquarters for the Mining company... thinking if anywhere would have information on what happened it would be there...
Interviewer: And did you?
Miles: We found the answers before we even got inside blocking the street was a massive improvised barricade with human skeletons leading up to it.... they were facing away from it or towards it.... the skeletons had bullet marks in their ribs or skulls so they were either running to the barricade or trying to fight to defend it...... We knew the answers were beyond it and we were right...... Because right in front of the Headquarters was a......a........ A Mass Grave..... a massive pile of skeletons.......human skeletons.... all of them burned.... someone had piled the bodies up and then set them on fire.......and above them painted on the corporate buildings wall were some English words..... "Never More Shall We Flee... Never More Shall We Kneel"........ And they weren't the only colonists we found.... some had been strung up..... they were hanging from anything and everything...
Interviewer: Any Idea What might have killed them
Miles: A variety of things.... some had cut marks on their rib cages... where the heart would be.... others had bullet marks in their bones..... They had all been slaughtered.... who ever did it.... left no survivors..... If we didn't want to know the truth.... we wouldn't have been able to break off the shock of all those thousands of skeletons.... all those people just piled up and set on fire.... we went inside the Corporate building and we found a treasure trove of intel....
Interviewer: What did you find?
Miles: It was all bullshit..... all of it... the Colony was a lie...... it seemed to mine the minerals on Titana.... the Mining company had illegally created a human/alien hybrid.... mixing the DNA of humans with that of the native wildlife.... so the hybrids could breath both our air and the toxic air of Titana..... and it seems that they and the colony used them as a sought of slave labor..... forcing them to live in underground caverns within the mines.... punishing them with whippings and rations..... and the same thing that has happened in the past when slaves are force to work....
Interviewer: What happened?

Interviewer: What did you do after you discovered this?
Miles: I immediately ordered everyone back to camp.... We all knew why.... we needed to get out of there.... we needed to get off Titana.... We didn't want to be on that planet when the Marauders found out we were there... if they didn't already......
Interviewer: What was it like when you got back to camp?
Miles: Afraid.... everyone was Afraid... scared for their lives.... we were all constantly looking around....with our weapons readied... the first thing we did was activate the sentry guns..... after that we called for extraction... we were told that it would be an hour or two before it came.... and I have to tell ya..... it is a terrifying thought having to wait..... having to wait and see if your rescue will come in time..... Interviewer: But it didn't stop it though?
Miles: Hell No... (Laughter) We kept reading about protests demanding we be freed and an investigation into the colony on Titana be launched..... then after about a week I learned Wilks and Tessa had been freed and that I was to be transferred to a civilian prison...... a month or so later I read that the investigation had found evidence that Beyond Mining & Co did commit illegal genetic experiments and slavery of the hybrids..... which lead to the Marauders rebelling and of course years later destroying the Colony and slaughtering everyone who lived there...... Beyond Minings stocks dropped like a ton of bricks.... the company went bankrupt and UN had to admit they knew the whole thing had happened and covered it up.....my sentence was changed from life to only six months..... I'll be leaving soon.... see my family again.....
Interviewer: You think they'll be proud of you?
Miles: I hope so..... but I am happy about one thing though... the people who died two centuries ago there.... might finally find some peace..... the truth had been uncovered the truth of the horror and bloodshed they went through is now revealed..... So I am damn proud of what we did standing up.... refusing to to silent about what we saw.....
Interviewer: And the Marauders? What do you think of them now after everything you've done?
Miles: I feel sympathy..... I mean what they did to the colonists was horrific.... but we need to understand that the colonists did nothing whilst they lived as slaves having to suffer god knows what cruelty....
Interviewer: Do you think of them often?
Miles: Sometimes.... most especially that single one that stood atop the ridge.... that single one that stood with his spear, I've constantly wondered why he didn't kill us all.... or why he showed himself.... but who knows.....I will say this though.... Humanity no longer has a place on Titana.... it belongs to them now.....
William Miles was released from prison after 9 months of many called wrongful imprisonment, he returned to his family and was greeted as a hero. Despite multiple requests the United Nations has denied all access to Titana, deeming the world to dangerous for humans.
During the making of this documentary, a independent science mission landed on Titana, with the authority of the United Federation of Systems, the team involving Durk and Felis fighters was never heard from after their landing, search parties sent by the U.N found their wrecked camp and bodies three days after they had lost contact.
The final report pointed towards Marauder attack.
There has been no further study on Titana since.
